Hi

For this, let's assume that .tel will not be a total flop.

What type of keywords will be most valuable for this extension? Will it be geographical keywords, like newyork.tel, losangeles.tel, etc, or what else?

Jennifer.has.tel

Just updated

I'm going to offer these as leased subdomains as being exclusive, must-have addresses. At this point, I'm not worried about directories and indexing (though I would not rule this out for the future). Customers will put these memorable addresses on their cards and hand them out.

In other words, I plan to market "has" as short and memorable.

If this becomes successful, then I might offer some additional services on a .dot com site.

Agreed. A treasure trove of easily harvested data on the 4% or 5% of .TELs that actually resolve and aren't parked.

I am testing this myself with one of my tel's and the spam is already rolling in - just as I and others suspected. The email is used nowhere else - created ONLY for the .tel domain and after just a few days it has already been scrapped.

Now with an actual website you can easily shield your email address...

After all of my enthusiasm about the potential of a popunder "companion site" I saw this post:

http://rikkles.blogspot.com/

Relevant excerpt:

"ince .tel was designed so that it would be totally different from any other TLD: no websites, and therefore no parking pages, no ads, no redirects, no popup, popunders or malware. That was pretty clearly understood by the domainer community, whose more entrepreneurial members are building new revenue models based on communications services."

I'm disappointed because I didn't consider the popunder concept, as proposed below, to be the equivalent of spamming. I think I understand what Telnic is wanting to avoid, but does that mean the baby must be thrown out with the bathwater? For all the innovation Telnic has brought to this project, it seems to me there must be a way to implement the automatic launching of a companion URL without creating a portal for all the less desirable elements that, I think, most domainers would want to exclude as well.

If I understand this correctly, Telnic permits the launching of a secondary URL - if the visitor to my .tel contact page clicks on the link, but I'm not permitted to further draw the visitor in by opening a second URL below the .tel contact page (even though this would potentially result in greater visitor interest and site retention).

In some ways, this reminds me of a DVD player I own that rejects as, "NOT ALLOWED" any attempt on my part to jump forward to the main menu without first watching the opening advertisements and previews after inserting a movie to watch. In other words, it's as if someone is saying:

"Sure, we could allow it, the technology is basic, and it wouldn't be difficult to implement, but we know better than to let you make your own decision when it comes to this kind of thing!"

I know I should have paid more attention during my logic classes in school, but if memory serves me correctly, here's what seems to be going on:

______

Argument:

Popunders can generate undesirable spam.

Wordwalker is proposing a popunder.

Therefore, Wordwalker is proposing undesirable spam.

_____

The only part I remember is that the argument failed. (If you were paying attention in class, help me out here!)

All I'm asking is that Telnic consider the potential for reinventing the popunder to be a force for good instead of an instrument of evil.

Thanks,
-WW

So you're saying the usual sunrise "favorites" (we all know what they are) are still not worth anything in the .info or .eu extensions? I find that hard to believe. :|
The approach could work if you concentrate on a few select domains.
When you grab domains to the tune of tens of thousands like Ovidio did in the .eu zone, liquidity problems do arise down the road :tri:
Plus, excessive speculation kills the market and consumers are put off because the whole game was rigged from the start and they have had no chance to grab decent keywords. In theory, speculators can accumulate nice keyword domains but if nobody wants to buy them how much are they truly worth.

sdsinc is basically saying that newyork.tel and others like it are each worth less than approx. $350 + whatever the TM registration fees were.

Just bizarre.
Bizarre isn't it ? ;)
IMO this domain is only worth as much as you can make with it.
Vanity business card ? Directory ?
I wonder how many of you have any practical experience making money with domains. It's hard enough to monetize fully-fledged (ie. web-enabled) domains. And I think the whole directory scheme under .tel is impractical and not user-friendly. On top of that I truly believe the niche is not so profitable.

If you can't recoup your investment, these names are not valuable. That's the bottom line.

WordWalker: Don't lose sight of the fact that .tel is about communications. Focus on the CTC model. Give up the ghost of popup/unders and create real value instead - that's what will make you wealthy. The web proxy page is less important than you think.

Sorry for the short reply; off to watch a movie!

Is this PopUnder process specifically banned by TelNic?
If so, too bad really. It's cool. I like it.
I think it can only enhance the monetization of .TEL sites.
I'd love to hear further input from telsters.

If you look at my previous posts, you'll see that I totally get that part. I just thought a workable popunder solution would be the icing on the cake.

(hmm, maybe if they dump the popunder label and simply refer to it as the web enabled "Telinator" ... Oh.. and, ah, somehow work the word "quantum" in there, too... either "quantum" or "hybrid"...) :gl:

I hate popunders. It is always just spam, and I think most internet users feel the same way. This is just my opinion but I think it would hurt the extension by having popunders. That would be a spammers paradise.

Really, think about the last time you had a popunder. It probably just pissed you off that you had to make an extra click to get rid of some spam.

As much as it may help some end users, I think in the end it would do more harm then good.

The .tel is what it is, a quick and easy way to display contact info. Love it or leave that is what it is about.

I think they're just targeting the US market right now - I'm told they'll role out to Europe and elsewhere soon.

Here are some of the creatives they're running:

Wow, those are really weak ads. They are obviously targeted towards the non-techie types who'll never really use it once they buy it.

Just bizarre.

And that could end up being a perfectly reasonable conclusion.

These are indeed profile URL's and not traditional website URL's. What would myspace.com/newyork be worth to someone? Certainly more than newyork.tel is.

To all of you talking about .tel offering a popup....

I see you are obviously having second thoughts about the profitability of .tel domains, so you are now demanding a popup feature to save the day.

However there are things called popup blockers, and they are now included with every major browser. Not many "clean" popups these days are seen.

Those sites that you still get popups on are constantly on top of finding code that beats the blockers. Being that this process is somewhat shady, large businesses with an image to protect don't do it because it would bring bad PR.

Furthermore, .tel is about finding out how to contact people. Why stop with launching a website in a popup? Why not auto dial their number, IM them on Skype, AIM and Yahoo all at once AND send them a fax? lol

Of course you are getting spam, you could put a test e-mail in this thread and you will get spam. You put an e-mail address anywhere on the internet and it will get spam.

Not to defend the .tel, I am still a skeptic but there is an option to make info public or private.

Try it again and make the e-mail address private. If you still get spam, that is a huge problem that .tel would need to address.

After thinking about the repercussions of popunders, I think I have to agree here. Our intentions may be good, but it would be a paradise for spammers.

As far as popups, slide across ads, popunders, some of the worst sites are major media sites. I hate that newest one (on Yahoo!), that seems to come from nowhere and just explodes on the screen (it must be embedded in the page itself).

As users, we all hate them when they are imposed on us, yet advertisers love em.

To be clear, my vision of a popunder or popup relative to .TEL is more of a "hover over".
A brief description of the link to be clicked in advance of the actual click.
Perhaps in my earlier posts regarding the popunder/up term, my understanding of the semantic meaning was not being made clear via my responses.
I do like the idea of a "hover over" descriptive of a link prior to being clicked.
I think that would be cool and look good. But maybe not on all types of sites. Just as an option for certain sites.
No second thoughts here. My team and I are stoked! We are quite clear as to what can be done with these names at this time and look forward to further creative applications to the platform in the future. We captured great names in our niches and are very pleased to have spent our dollars to do so.
With the keyword generics we grabbed and using them as a simple directional bridge to our sites, the ROI is estimated to be several fold.
In the investment world they are called "ten-baggers"! And as my clients already know and have come to expect, "we did it again"!
But yeah, I hate spam too!
