Hi

For this, let's assume that .tel will not be a total flop.

What type of keywords will be most valuable for this extension? Will it be geographical keywords, like newyork.tel, losangeles.tel, etc, or what else?

the bottom line is, if a company can spend $1 to earn $2 they will do it. if not they dont deserve to be in business anyway. Similarly, if I can spend $.50 to earn $1, I too will do it every time. To me this means, I may look for ways to advertise to drive the traffic.

Just to make up an example, lets say I owned widgets.tel (i dont). if the average order of widgets for company x is $100, and they find on average that they convert 2% of leads into sales, it means every lead is worth $2. Now, based on the example I could negotiate a rate, lets say $.50 per qualified lead, in which case I'm offering them a 400% ROI. (this is just made up for the sake of example).

My trick will be to discover my own conversion rate - how many of the visitors to my .tel will click through to the company, and how much do I need to spend in advertising per visitor to make a profit.

This is just one line of thinking but I dont see that its rocket science. of course it is more of a business model, not for lazy domainers. It may take some ingenuity and forward thinking but I don't see why it cant be done.

now the hope is that .tel will optimize well in which case generic terms will generate natural search traffic, and, that .tel will ultimately be adopted to the level that it will even get type-in traffic from people on mobile devices. In that case, your ROI is unlimited because you pay nothing for this traffic. That's the same power that premium .coms currently wield and why a business will pay big bucks for toys.com, loans.com, etc.

the same thing could be said about widgets.name, widgets.cc, widgets.ws or any domain for any extension. I could build a directory on widgets.cc and try to get people to put their link on it for a fee but it will get no traffic just like widgets.tel but at least the .cc you could actually develop properly to build up traffic.

Yeah, you are really limited within the confines of the format as far as development goes.

You are correct you could launch the exact same thing on any domain. That is the problem I have with .TEL, to me the format seems to box it in. On most other extensions you could run a .TEL type script, as well as anything else you wanted.

yes but dont you think that the fact that with .tel, it is sooo easy for the general public to use that this will make it popular and mainstream, thats the purpose. yes, there is not as many ways for monopolising on it, but i guess when there is heaps of users out there with their own personal .tels, there will be ways of utilising this, and everyone will be familiar with .tels, unlike any other externsions out there , bar .com. remember the general public only know of .coms or their country codes.

whats your thoughts guys, im not an expert on this but have a few ideas

Think of .tel as a yellow pages monopoly.
Who wants a monopoly over one's private data ? We already have google :gl:

Virtually all internet users have heard of COM/NET/ORG. TEL will never even come close to touching those.

I look at the use of .TEL as a good idea to use for consolidated business contacts at BusinessName.tel, for personal contacts Name.tel, or family directories LastName.tel

I have real doubts to the value from a commercial perspective, unless you are talking of "true premiums"

Hotels.tel
Lawyers.tel

Something that would actually make sense as a directory. It is hard enough to sell advertising on an established site, people who think that there will be users waiting in line to pay for a directory listing are mistaken IMO.

i would add my business to a domainers.tel but not his info/tv to be lost in a sea of addsence and youtube clips....less control to the domainer is better for me.
but only if he gets a page one google rank,he gets my number.

No, it's franchisor.tel

I would not pay $100 for the .com

The .tel version is worth $0

Yeah, that's a lot to spend. Most of the big ones were landrush. Slowly working on them but got other bigger things to complete first.

Thank you for sharing. Though I feel you could say insert <new / any tld here> and it would be the same story.

Maybe somebody could help me understand what his problem was that would be different from any other tld out there?

I guess telnic could have been like some other tld's similar to .pro where you have to prove license. But I think they were wise to try and get it out there as quickly as possible. The fact that you cannot park them may help "the market" get the domains to the end users.

On another note, I personally enjoyed the landrush format. 300 first come first serve versus other formats which make you bid ridiculously high amounts. And then they still turn around and sit on it!

How utterly bizarre - Karl Marx has been reincarnated; runs a site about franchise opportunities on the one hand, blogs about domain property rights on the other!

Of course, the political science books will have to be rewritten, "From each according to their ignorance of information to each according to their needs of owning a premium piece of real estate!".

Proud member of the Telster bourgeoisie - capital formation for the elevation of communication!

So holders of domains regardless of use - e.g. for parking and monetization or for whatever other lawful reason - are not "end users"?

.tel sucks, period.

It all looks good on the commercial, where the two dudes fight over who will get in the blonde's pants first and Mr. "Ben.tel" writes his URL with 21st century feces (sorry, with latte) on the train's window. But other that that, good luck making a viable business out of a French Minitel system of the 80's.

.tel's plunder is its very modus operandi. Since you cannot build a real web site on a .tel domain, it's crap.

Just saw the whois for alphabet.tel and guess who it is....
it's BMW, yeah that BMW, the car company!
Sure they use the BMW 3 letters as their branding, but alphabet.tel?
What are they up to with that reg?
Interesting.

Yeah I totally agree - it's actually a lot like the aviation industry.. you cannot put a website on top of a Boeing 747.. there's no business model there at all. Who wants to fly in a plane that doesn't have a Sedo parking page on the cockpit's dash? It's crap.

I can appreciate tongue-in-cheek commentary, but are you just desperately trying to justify this zombie TLD?

Parking page = end users... maybe to some, but not in my book.
