Hi

For this, let's assume that .tel will not be a total flop.

What type of keywords will be most valuable for this extension? Will it be geographical keywords, like newyork.tel, losangeles.tel, etc, or what else?

Like I said before I think .tel works for consolidated business contacts, personal contacts, family directories, etc.

I think some people are vastly overrating the commercial appeal. These are not websites, there are only so many things you can do in the format.

It seems like the launch of .MOBI all over again.

I like last names.
I have guzman.tel, salazar.tel, patton.tel

Yeah, I think those have nice potential. I think family directories could be popular on .TEL

I still doubt the commercial value that many see.

Why would a hotel or company or whatever pay someone $20+ a month to put a link to their business on one of your .tel domains when they can be listed in yellowpages.com and the mobile version of yellowpages.com and google maps and iphone apps all for FREE and all of which receive huge amounts of traffic?

Keep the .tel regos coming here, its good to see what others have got.

how would you possibly make money on something like aprilfoolsday.tel and what would you put on the site? People are regging some real garbage here. Would you even look up april fools day in the yellow pages?

To me it's pretty clear .tel names won't get a lot of traffic, if any.
Advertisers are not going to pay for advertising if don't get any referrals.

Now that the beast is out let the telsters show us how they make money :guilty:

Guys, i think all the people who got in early and got any good .tels will be laughing all the way to the bank in years to come. I dont think many people realise how big .tel will be. It will become the norm for society to have a .tel. Its as simple as that. Ive got mine and im happy. Wait till the general public catch on, its gunna be bigger than ben hur!

Seriously, this has been the best opportunity in years !!!

thats exactly what domainers say everytime a new extension comes out. why will .tel domains become the norm for society to have?

What's a hot button? In any case, why need hot buttons? Type the name, press "call"... that's what the aim is.

Let me clarify:

You'll be able to type in (as an example) "VIP" into a mobile phone and then press "call" (without having to type in ".tel")?

What I meant is a button that would take place of the tel TLD (like shortcode calling).

I'll have a crack at summing up my belief in the idea and why it will be transformational:

1) Telecommunications are critical to everything that we do,

2) Communications are increasingly complex - more channels through more devices through more services, with more people, in less time,

3) .tel presents technically elegant solutions to many of the problems (both existing and imagined) derived from 2) and in a very desirable fashion,

4) It is a fully extensible platform,

5) Ideas are revolutionary; not people, things, or actions. And nothing can stop them - not even if every single person on the planet were a naysayer. We already saw the most outspoken ones on this forum buy up .tel's on the very first day!

6) :$:

Yeah that was classic, the naysayers certainly put their money where their mouth wasn't, lol. Wait for the excuses flood in to this post, lol... for example "I just thought I'd buy some and show you how crap they will be", lol, or "I'm just securing my brand", or "good domains are worth something in a crap extension" blah blah, blah... no excuses left now (but Im sure they'll still find another one)

True, but what does .tel have to do with it.

2) Communications are increasingly complex - more channels through more devices through more services, with more people, in less time,

It's pretty easy with many sites online/programs/electronics

3) .tel presents technically elegant solutions to many of the problems (both existing and imagined) derived from 2) and in a very desirable fashion,

Which problems?

4) It is a fully extensible platform,

Even with the restrictions?

5) Ideas are revolutionary; not people, things, or actions. And nothing can stop them - not even if every single person on the planet were a naysayer. We already saw the most outspoken ones on this forum buy up .tel's on the very first day!

There's a difference between spending $10-$40 on a speculative name and investing heavily on it. Idea is not that revolutionary.
There are sites that allow you to create contact pages, yellowpages sites with sophisticated technology supporting it, and so on.

the bottom line is, if a company can spend $1 to earn $2 they will do it. if not they dont deserve to be in business anyway. Similarly, if I can spend $.50 to earn $1, I too will do it every time. To me this means, I may look for ways to advertise to drive the traffic.

Just to make up an example, lets say I owned widgets.tel (i dont). if the average order of widgets for company x is $100, and they find on average that they convert 2% of leads into sales, it means every lead is worth $2. Now, based on the example I could negotiate a rate, lets say $.50 per qualified lead, in which case I'm offering them a 400% ROI. (this is just made up for the sake of example).

My trick will be to discover my own conversion rate - how many of the visitors to my .tel will click through to the company, and how much do I need to spend in advertising per visitor to make a profit.

This is just one line of thinking but I dont see that its rocket science. of course it is more of a business model, not for lazy domainers. It may take some ingenuity and forward thinking but I don't see why it cant be done.

now the hope is that .tel will optimize well in which case generic terms will generate natural search traffic, and, that .tel will ultimately be adopted to the level that it will even get type-in traffic from people on mobile devices. In that case, your ROI is unlimited because you pay nothing for this traffic. That's the same power that premium .coms currently wield and why a business will pay big bucks for toys.com, loans.com, etc.

This remains to be seen, but at this point I think all bets are on as to how anyone will look to make .tel profitable, and as long as the medium itself works, people with enough gumption will find ways of leveraging it, regardless of the carping that "you cant build a website on it"

now, put that in your blog and smoke it :D

Tend to agree up to a point but I see this extension being much more successful than .mobi and certainly longer lasting. It is the personal/business web identity that many people /companies will adopt- and best of all- it is simple and easy to get your info out there- the benefit of NO website. We will probably see more .tel "live" than ANY other extension- I am not including parking pages as live. IM-HO.com
