Hi

For this, let's assume that .tel will not be a total flop.

What type of keywords will be most valuable for this extension? Will it be geographical keywords, like newyork.tel, losangeles.tel, etc, or what else?

Got numbers.tel and forsale.tel.
Both are active with just free links to phone listings for the first, and property/cars for the second.
Any ideas on development would be welcome.

sucks.tel, got a steal at $30.

Yep, great buying on that one for $30 man, considering dev potential! :]

Guys, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but .TEL domains cannot be developed. Dev ideas are pretty much useless with this TLD because you cannot host websites on them. Owning a .TEL is more like having a Facebook account than it is owning a regular type of domain name.

That said, I picked up rjb.tel and namepros.tel - one for my work, one for my personal, neither for resale purposes.

My 2 .tel domains:

  • CityMaps.tel
  • FunGames.tel

lol - you flipped your .TEL domains now for just at a ROI rate of $5/hour

You should have kept them.

But I think this extension will play out like .mobi - down the crapper, basically

There does appear to be growing interest in this extension. I just closed a sale on 10 .TELs this morning. Considering my research time and registration fees, I made roughly $5 /hour (give or take a little). (:talk:)

I'm also feeling a bit of seller's remorse. They were solid names. :red:

When people talk about "developing" .tel domains they're talking about building directory services and monetising business listings and/or the communications channels themselves (CTC = Click To Connect).

Having said that, there are many other opportunities to develop applications and services on top of the .tel platform.

It's a brave new world - probably not for the feint hearted, but the risk/reward is staggeringly big.

Fair enough, pp. As long as people buying them know what exactly the options are here. I'll be following what's going on with the market before jumping in any further.

Excellent analogy RJ. These .tels are solely for information purposes. I can't understand some of the names registered as you can't provide contact information for them that would entice someone to visit that .tel.

.tel and any other extension is like comparing two different things. In my opinion, geos and names will have the most success. However, good luck to everyone with their investments.

nobody really knows the future of .tel, being an unique tld.
Social networking is the fastest growing "niche" on the net and this is mostly what is this extension about (and advertising of course).
However I understand that has been well advertized and has a potential. (I bought a few just in case ;))
Anyway just time will tell...

Deja Vu? :hehe:

Are people still registering .tel's? It seems less and less are being posted to this thread as we digressed on this tangent.

:)

Here they are some of mine:

  • BACKORDERS.tel
  • OPORTO.tel (the second main city in Portugal)

Opinions are much appreciated. Thanks.

I agree. Every investments has their share of ups and downs so nothing new as far as investing into a new tld. I bought a few .tel as well just to see where it goes and if it flops then hey we move on. It won't be the first time I've lost money and I'm sure won't be the last but all in all I had fun or atleast try to. :hehe:

This is why people should diversify their investments and not just depend on one solution.

my 2 cents for the day ...

dot tel will not work if the names are just undeveloped..
maybe it would be a good idea for uk geo to link there names in some kind of database

I don't know much about development at this stage, as I'm pretty new to this stuff (but like it a lot)
However I do think ForSale.Tel has a future of some sort.
No hurry anyway, I'll see what where it goes.

Now that registration prices are more affordable we're starting to see some real awful domains like TMs. It is sad to observe the same patterns at every new TLD launch.
