Hi

For this, let's assume that .tel will not be a total flop.

What type of keywords will be most valuable for this extension? Will it be geographical keywords, like newyork.tel, losangeles.tel, etc, or what else?

ok. returning to the topic at hand, what do you feel will be the potential for a city.tel with population of 1 million plus?

It depends on several factors:
1-how dense is the population (too wide like canada is not so good and condensed like new york is best)
2-how many businesses are there (potential clients)
3-Do they use mobile techs (3g, iphone...)
and several others....

In general city is always a great asset for any tlds.

OK you don't have $200.00 to cash out for an iphone to check how your dot tel will look like so here is a tool that simulates on your PC an iphone.

It has approximately the same potential (probably less) than a city.mp, another heavily marketed TLD: http://chi.mp/

chi.mp might look ok on the surface, but it certainly cannot do everything a .tel can do and at the end of the day it's a regular hosted website extension, you might like to think of it as a try hard, but can't, dot tel. To say that a city.mp name could be an even better proposition than a city.tel tld is laughable! Certainly won't be useful to a business either it doesn't work off the dns for a start and is slow to load. in no way as professional a contacts hub as .tel. It costs you $20 a year after the first free year as well, so it's not exactly free. Just my 2.5 cents. Your arguments are still mostly lame at best (but that's just IMHO).

When it comes to domains, there are few more skillful or knowledgeable than Ron. This quote from yesterday only adds further conviction to my belief regarding the probable outcome of the .TEL extension.

Nope.

There is little reason to roll (or have rolled) the dice at $300 a pop, when soon you can get a roll for around $10.00. IMO.

This thread doesn't appear to be going anywhere - I humbly suggest it gets locked, and a new marketing related thread started elsewhere, to coincide with the launch tomorrow(?). We should be discussing business models, marketing techniques, technical issues, voip carriers, etc. rather than wasting time squabbling.

All,

I just wanted to proactively update you that we anticipated .tel domains resolving to the DNS from this week and the WHOIS going live at the same time. Whilst the agreement between Registrars and registrants states go live no later than 23rd March, we now anticipate that .tel domains will resolve to the DNS in the week of 2nd March (next week).

Originally the plan was to make the live date for .tel as early as possible in the landrush, on day one. Registrars requested a delay for processing the rush of first day applications, to avoid major cash flow issues. So we pushed back the live date, and took advantage of it to make another set of iterations to the Telhosting, Telproxy and APIs, based on the feedback of VIP.tel.

We'll be updating this information on a new community page that is going up on our website - http://telnic.org/community-landing.html - which will also answer some of the most common questions that keep coming up regarding MX records, directories, etc and where we will be developing some further resources for .tel owners use.

As different registrars will also be sending out the management tools at different times to you over the course of the next few weeks, it's best to check with your registrar when you can expect access to the management console.

Thanks and regards,

OMG, we're just waiting for this day. Delay for launching is not good start, Justin. BTW, thanks for update.

I understand the frustration kukgle and am prepared for the inevitable banter on the site. Just a little longer on the VIP.tel system to refine your solutions - you can see it works, so it's a matter of final tweaking.

Regards,

Justin

.Tel biz models

Heyo,

I took the suggestion to start another thread regarding .Tel business models, marketing and monetization etc. from the monster .Tel post.

This is the post I made there earlier to get things started.

Here's one example. I used my personal VIP.tel domain for this beta test. The actual domain is Condos.tel. But for the test period its http://scottsmith.vip.tel.

I know this example requires a lot of clicks if you go right thru to the end, especially if able to do this on your mobile. But I wanted to see how the folders and sub-folders worked and to identify areas where monetization can occur. I'm relatively comfortable that current technologies (gps, mobile browser tools etc.) and newly developing applications will help to reduce the number of clicks to get to the desired information much quicker.

Remember, this is just a beta test. The longest chain is thru North America to Canada, Ontario, Toronto and Bloor West and one of the links to specific contact information.

If you're looking to just flip domains on the aftermarket then my advice is to steer well clear of domain hacks!

If you're planning on building a directory services business then of course it's your prerogative, but if it were me then I'd rather try and buy a better name off somebody.

There must still be plenty of low/mid premium generic categories available, and particularly geos. If you spend enough time looking then I bet you'll be able to pick up some relatively good ones.

Dude,

I have no idea what you are talking about. I would never pay $300 for a phone book. I just saw the m-o.tel was taken but h-o.tel wasn't. Nobody will ever be able to flip these names for a profit.....N-e-v-e-r.tel....

Obama will have to make a stimulus package to bailout .tel investors!

Enjoy!

Not to mention the other extensions in the pipeline :)

BTW do not bother with domain hacks people, this is a landrush... plenty of generics available.
The only problem is that sex.tel is as useless as h-o-t-e-l.tel :imho:

Don't you naysayers have a mobi or tv thread that needs to be defended?

We have heard your arguments, we have listened patiently, we have done our research, and we have made our decisions.

At this point, why would you even care anyway?

We are well aware of risks involved.

:)

Have a nice day.

another infatuated fan

I've registered some that I feel will be great. I'm hoping to be on line the second they go live at the standard price. I do resell, but not top tier at my quantity.
Any other resellers? I'm looking at a few options, and see a bunch being made off grabbing new registrations. I've got some nifty directory ideas, as well for monitizing.
Anyone looking to join forces early on?

Did anyone landrush some .tel name

One guys register several .tel domain in the begining of landrush.

epassporte.tel
doubleclick.tel
mozilla.tel

Any opinions on this. I think he has consititute infringement of intelecture property rights of trade mark owner. How could he make some money from those domain name to cover his cost 300USD for each one?
