Hi

For this, let's assume that .tel will not be a total flop.

What type of keywords will be most valuable for this extension? Will it be geographical keywords, like newyork.tel, losangeles.tel, etc, or what else?

I like the .tel extension because it easy to use, maintain, update and most of it does excactly what is needed I believe for this particular project.

If I want to book a cab it would be lovely to have the luxury to get my phone clcik on ukcabs.tel, select my location and have different taxi/cab firms at the touch of a button to hand.

I have been stranded many of times when out with friends and it has been a nightmare trying to find a taxi, this will solve the problem and believe it or not I already have lots of interest from different companies that are very keen to be added to the directory.

If I wanted to make a really snazzy directory with loads of features and other extra uses I would use a .com or .co.uk but when im on a night out or of need for a taxi all I want to do is get one booked as simple as possible and I believe the .tel extension for this is just perfect.
What you have written is not of a webmaster mindset. It is of a web surfer one.

I'm with you that your concept on the surface is alright. Someone has been ditched at a club and they need a way home, so they type in ukcabs.tel and one is on it's way. The question is, how did they know to type in ukcabs.tel? Are we assuming he Googled "London cabs" and the directory was ranked towards the top of page 1?

if it was launch in 90's it won't be as successful as today simply because reg will cost like 45 or more dollar and as mobile phones like iPhone Rims and other web browerable with 3g and else werent available to public in the 90's
By 90's desktop internet standards, .tel would have been pretty hi tech. I don't know if you were online back then, but Geocities, SimplePages, FortuneCity, etc... were all really big. .tel would have fit in very nicely alongside them. Especially if domains had been given away for free and the whole thing ad supported like the other free hosting services.

I think .TEL is a TLD that's slightly past its time, which makes sense considering the TLD was pending approval for 10 years. The notion of being able to dial folks using methods easier to remember than phone number (e.g. e-mail addresses, even IP addresses) spurred a mini VoIP revolution around the mid/lately-90s, and .TEL would likely have caught sparks if it were approved within a year or two following its introduction. Sure, it would have been great to plug johnsmith.tel into a web browser knowing it would quickly pull up John's contact information arond '97-'98, but Google's powerful search capabilities (e.g. "John Smith" + "contact information") and innovations in speed-dialing have largely obviated the need for these shorthands. :imho:

If you have a database "tickler" file of customers that are rotated through on a regular basis, then you know that virtually everytime you attempt to contact "xx" number of customers by phone or email there will be missed connections because either phone or email or both have changed. In the case of a phone number, there may or may not be a "number has changed" announcement. With email, the bad address just gets kicked back. Tel domains ensure that posted contact information will include the most recent contact information for the domain holder. With apps, widgets, etc. that provide for integration of .Tel domains into Outlook and address books of pdas and other mobile devices, you will never have to chase down a bad phone number or abandoned email address again.

For social networking, depending on the group and/or activity (i.e., school or family reunions, holidays, weddings, etc.) months or even years may pass since the last contact was initiated. If you've ever been involved on the organizing end of one of these things, you know the effort required to come up with good current contact info. It's a nightmare! Tel solves this problem so effortlessly, it's not even noticed.

Where else can you do that?

Hi

Thanks for your question.

As always marketing any idea or anything new is the most dificult part of a new project, putting a site together or an idea is the fun bit I always find.

I am not planning to just finish the directory and the launch it because it would be finished before it has even started.

We are in the process of having some marketing flyers/posters/cards ect being done as well as speaking to fims over the phone to give them the insight into this new idea. We also have some great contacts that should make it even easier to get this idea of the ground, and lots of people talking about it.

We will be putting 100% time and effort into this project and at the moment we are looking for a launch date of around the beginning of december 2009 depending on the amount of busineeses we have on board at this time.

This may change and it has not been fully confirmed but should you be interested and would like to know any more in this project please pm me and I will keep you all updated nearer the launch date.

Regards

Gav

SOS1.tel, Emergency Phone Numbers International Directory

We created SOS1.tel, the mobile-friendly Emergency Phone Numbers International Directory.

SOS1.tel lists in 3 languages (English, French and Spanish) more than 400 emergency phone numbers (police, medical, fire, sea rescue, etc.) of 134 countries worldwide, all accessible via a simple and intuitive navigation tree (SOS1 > Continent > Country).

Your feedback would be much appreciated: thanks in advance!

Best,

Thanks thetruman!

Unfortunately SOS.tel has been registered during Landrush (before we got the idea of SOS1.tel) by a large Spanish food company.
We contacted them and proposed to purchase it back, but they turned us down in a hardly polite way >:(

Best,

Some great .tels there.

Just had a look at your portfolio.

May I ask you why you are deciding to sell these great names at such an early stage of the .tel launch, rather than developing them into directories yourself or even holding onto them and seeing what the market does in a year or so.

Have you bought these domains thinking .tel was going to be a lot more successful in your opinion, but now changed your mind and going to be selling them because you don't think .tel has much of a future, or for some other reson entirley ?

Just be great to know your reason for sale.

Regards

Gav

Thanks Gav!

I am considering selling them because I am working on a new website and could use some more funds to help get things up and running much quicker and to a higher standard, also for advertising, etc.

I still have some .tels for personal / business use that I have not listed. :)

SOS1.tel

Thanks a lot sh9696!

SOS1.tel indeed seems to become more and more popular: we have for example just been contacted by the Swiss Federal Government with suggestions of additional emergency phone numbers for Switzerland.

If you notice a wrong/outdated number or want to suggest additional ones, please use http://Feedback.SOS1.tel/!

Thanks again for your kind words. Best,

Congratulations: this is a real useful .tel domain! I might actually use it some day. Brilliant! and your deserve praise for the work done.
I am just curious to know if it is purely philanthropic work, or if you are planning to monetize it in some way?

Not if you bookmarked it before hand, Like now I just viewed the site and found the one for my area i.e united-kingdom.europe.sos1.tel . and tell my friends and family, if I do it or not is another matter.

The domain that has been used will need some serious marketing done as people will forget about the 1 and go to the wrong site then maybe give up finding the right 1, and just use the old fashions way ring 999,911,112 etc.

Either way its a good idea and hope it works out for them.

It solves the problem only if like 90% of the population is willing to pay for a .tel, knows how to use it and does not procrastinate in keeping it updated.

That is a lot to ask, and I think everyone here knows it is not realistic.

---------- Post added at 07:38 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:24 PM ----------

What effect will 4G networks have on .tel's sales pitch? It'll be available to everyone in the US within 2 years (much sooner in large cities). So storing profile data at the NS level for decreased load times isn't really going to matter when regular sites are loading 5x faster than they are now.
