Hi

For this, let's assume that .tel will not be a total flop.

What type of keywords will be most valuable for this extension? Will it be geographical keywords, like newyork.tel, losangeles.tel, etc, or what else?

I think this proves that Google will not be penalizing dot tels and that populated dot tels can rank high.
As long as the expression being searched is not competitive everything is possible.

do you bother to read posts before sending your flippant reply? the searched-for term got 10.8 million google results? how is that not competitive? my dot tel ranked sixth from the top.

Hi tkstark,

I think what sdsinc means is that the search result can have a big number, but the search rate may be virtually nil.

the numbers can be big but if there's no sponsor ads then its not worth trying. Google's 'Sponsor Ads' is a sure way to tell if your keyword is being searched or they wouldn't pay adwords to get listed.

I think what TKStark was saying is that Google listed his TEL, therefore Google is listing TELs and not punishing them for limited content.

Here's another example that is high volume.

The three letters "tel" get a total of 976,000,000 results in Google. That's big!

smallco.tel has reached the 28th position in Google for these three letters. That's page three, the 8th position.

Here's a list of the 23 companies ahead of the domain name smallco.tel. Some companies have more than one listing:

telnic.org
wikipedia.org
tnsos.org
alltel.com
gale.com
iana.org
yahoo.com
iqt.org
ectel09.org
cnn.com
ktel.com
telavivuniv.org
teltru.com
centurytel.com
rehov.org
telefontelaviv.com
calftel.com
myspace.com
autobytel.com
ptsupply.com
teldrug.com
telgo.com
hilton.com

There are a lot of companies that have been around for many years that would like to do this well on a search for "tel". How about Name.com, Dotster.com and Moniker.com? All are big sites selling TEL and have a lot more interest in showing up higher on this simple three letter search. In fact both Name.com and Dotster.com show up in the paid advertising for these letters. IMHO, the 28th spot is pretty good for a domain that has been in existence for only a few months.

TEL is going to do well in Google. There is no doubt, IMHO.

getting them listed hasn't been a problem. Getting them to rank for competitive keywords is another matter. Being thin on real content you have to really work extra hard on quality backlinks...

You are not going to get any new site to rank with competitive keywords in the first few months. That's what the Google Sandbox is all about.

From Wikipedia:
The phenomenon that people have claimed to observe is that Google temporarily reduces the page rank of new domains, placing them into what is referred to as its "sandbox", in an effort to counter the ways that search engine optimizers attempt to manipulate Google's page ranking..."

Any new site is going to take time and WORK. No site is going to get listed with popular terms just because it exists. So the question really is, how many TEL owners are WORKING and how many are applying the usual domainer buy-and-park mentality to a TLD that can't be parked?

in 90% of the cases that is VERY true;however, the sandbox effect is not entirely written in stone with google. there are times when a keyword is not saturated that you can place very high given that you place the right content... the trick is CONTENT! simply placing one link to activate your tel wont do... "build" a little something with a few directories and fill in the text portions as much as you can and you could place fairly high... i have a few that i am doing that with and would post the results if we were allowed to post links...

.tel's can be parked technically.

.Tel Business Alive & Well!

New .Tel Partnership

Telnic Limited (telnic.org), the registry operator for the new communications-focused .tel top level domain (TLD), is pleased to announce today (May 8, 2009) that Seed Network, Lynne Franks' community for Women's Enterprise, has joined the .tel community.

So it seems .Tel is picking up needed momentum in becoming more viral.

It looks like noone bid for .tel on Traffic event, If it was because their reserve price were too high, I blame these owners, they harm the .tel market and it's really BAD.

I have never heard of Seed Network. Is it a big organisation? Do they offer the required qualification for operating the dottel management console; Masters of Dottel Studies (MDS), an advanced degree with a high drop out rate. lol.

.tel hidden from the bidders...

if you went to snapnames.com and searched you could get a dropdown that would select ALL of the auctions in the traffic event... ALL EXCEPT TEL ... the tels that were listed had to be an after thought as there was no way to actually find them unless you were looking for them specifically....

ie- you could search for all of the .infos in the event, or all of the dot coms, but there was simply no way to place a bid onthe dot tels..

sooooo, i wouldnt worry too much .... the first real auction that you can actually place a bid in the extended auction mihgt give a much better indication.

ps- the *.coms didnt fare to well either, but there were some good buys....

Looks like the Seed Network has partnered as an affiliate for domain site.
They are looking for a way to profit.
The advert is good, but one has to wonder about the motivation.

Just want to check - has every telster with an iPhone/iPod Touch downloaded the free My.tel app from the App Store and left a review? Have you told your friends to do the same? It's important that we get as many positive reviews for it as possible.

Seednetwork.com has an Alexa traffic rank of over 7,000,000. I would not get too excited about this "news".

I't a niche site, so not really the big thing. But I'm happy they got .tel to promote.

The Telfriends interface needs to be simplified.

I was able to figure it all out, but I'm thinking of my less tech savvy friends and family.

I had to activate myself as a friend. Why? Why not make that automatic for domain owners?

Now that I think about it, maybe this is okay. Evidently my telfriend account will be good for ALL my domain accounts, so friending myself on all my domains will require making changes at my different registrars. Not a big deal.

Working it from the user panel is different than just someone who needs access to my private links.

I just need to go through the process from an enduser POV. I'll set up an account for my husband and see how it goes.

So far, I have only one site that will have private info for friends and family (I probably will add two more sites, though).
