It seems .PRO is slowly coming out of the cage with cheaper reg prices than they were a year ago and major registrars like netsol taking notice of the extension and promoting it.

Here are some that I picked up in last couple of days:

Does someone have an explanation why so many short .pro domains are dropping?

No, those 1-3 chars were not sold a few years ago (Reserve NOT met)...
And today Afilias just changed their WHOIS-records to "Reserved by Registry", no any real drops.

This is internal changing by Register .PRO,
currently all short domains are unavailable for registration and with these domains what they dropped yesterday (short and long) , they decided to have them formally in Unregistered status, but in the same time in Reserved Status instead to have a registry record that these domains are holding by .PRO Registry (Afilias),
but actually the situtation is not changed - these domains are unavailable
