The Phelps Countdown ...

Michael Phelps has the opportunity to write history.
He's off to a good start nabbing the 400m medley in world record time of: 4 minutes, 3.84 seconds, beating his own WR and crushing the competition.

1 down - 7 events to go! If he makes all 8 events, he'll be the most decorated Olympian in history...and most likely in all of our life time.

I'm not much of a swimming fan, but Phelps seriously rocks!

I thought he was getting lickened to someone that had acheived it.

Mark Spitz, coincidentally also a swimmer on the USA team, won 7 Gold medals at the '72 games in Munich.
I would guess that's why the Phelps situation is so interesting - 2 swimmers, 36 years apart..one has, the other one can write a new chapter in sports history.

Swiming is really the only event i can think of that you can put together 8 events for one person. Track by the time you get pass 4 events you start crossing over to a different kind of running and there is always a speacialist for that kind of running.

3rd Gold Medal and another WR - this time he shredded his own by 1 sec. 200m - freestyle.
This guy is on the best way to write his own huge chapter in sports history!
...even though i can only watch him on TV, it's almost an honor to see something this monumental take place in our life time!

Add to that the fact that he now has a total of 10 gold olympic medals and 25 world records up till this point. More than any other athlete in history.

...and here comes another Gold Medal. 800m Relay team kicked some major ass, pulverized the WR by more than 5 seconds and Michael Phelps looks like he's at a shopping mall, just picking the medals up. Fascinating doesn't even being to describe it...

Anyways, Phelps run has been amazing thus far! Too bad I'm Canadian and we haven't won a medal yet. Phelps is single handedly beating the entire Canadian team!

I think it's a combination of the two, with the swim suit being the main culprit.

Since the introduction of the Speedo suit, world records have been falling at an amazing rate.
