Many of the seasoned pro's on here do not bother with hand reg'd names, instead focussing on dropped names and the secondary market, but some, like me, continue to try and find a profit in hand reg names (I typically flip some low rent hand reg'd names for smaller profits - it's a small but continuous income).

So here is a handreg thread: What are your tips for finding a good hand reg? Whats the most you've ever made from a hand reg? you get the picture....

Fire away!

I've been hand registering 99% of my names since about 2001
I've let about 50 drop over the years because they were real rubbish.
I've sold hundreds of names from about $7 to $860
I've just been checking on some of them, and the one that sold for $860 is now for sale at $5000
One I sold for $500 to Comcast isn't in use; but they keep renewing it.
People just seem to be hanging on to most of the higher price names I've sold, and are not developing them. Many of them are parked and for sale. I did sell a few single dictionary word domains at prices I now wish I hadn't.
In general, if I can register a name for $2 or $3 and sell it for $30-$50 before it's due to renew, I'm happy. If I can sell for more, I'm even happier.
I don't do any development work.
I hope this helps.

Ralph.

Ralph - pretty similar style as me in that I just don't have the time for development, and I do view a $40 return on a $2 name a great result, where as I'm sure many would see this as just not being worthwhile!

Interesting thread.

There are loads of domains out there available still to hand reg, and don't think the 'major players' don't hand reg domains still, they do. I was watching the Sherpa video from last week and Adam had an idea and checked it, found it available and registered it. Rick is constantly having ideas and registering them.

But make sure you don't sell yourself short when you flip your hand regs. All the rubbish that is talked about concerning a hand-reg not being worth money because it was just registered is rubbish. If you were walking along the beach and found a gold nugget weighing 16 oz.s which had been washed up on to the beach by a storm would you accept someone valuing it at $30-$40 because you had just 'found it'? O_o

I love selling hand reg's because that means the prospective buyer has likely NEVER been offered the domain before and it is a brand new concept to them even if they have other domains they can see the benefit of expanding their grasp on the internet market.:)

Yes, don't be too greedy. It's much better to sell 100 domain names for $30 than not sell any at all which are listed at $5000

Regards

Ralph.

I hardly handreg any more these days, but you can still see decent domains dropping here and there. Also in ccTLDs. Handreg/Drop is still a viable route, especially when you are looking for decent domains for your own use, but you are not concerned about resale.

A large portion of my portfolio is hand reg's.
I've sold some for $250-$1200.
Have dozens that I desperately want to develop.
Just takes a lot of time.

What's the difference between seeing a drop that you want become expired and regging it without tipping off the vultures by putting in a back order? :-/

great point, especially given many hand reg names where once registered

a quick way to see if your hand regged was once registered is to search it on domaintools its free to see how many prior drops etc

Correct. And once you put in a back order, it alerts some people (just like the number of bids on GD). Of course for good names, you need to. But, you can still find gems that nobody else sees and hand register them as soon as they expire.

I don't own many hand regs because I find it very time consuming to find good ones but 2 sales so far this year actually were names i hand registered, one sold for $1,999 and the other for $500. I used to spend quite some time on Justdropped.com to find good ones but don't have much time for that anymore these days.

I think that sometimes backordering is a huge waste of money. I mean..if you really want that name that's fine but we all can find good alternatives among dropped domains...

I am a big fan of hand registering names..sometimes you get it right..sometimes you get a crap but it's all part of the game isn't it?

So, Just hand reg'd my first domain in a little while, which I think isn't bad for a hand reg:

CushionCoversOnline.com

2400 monthly searches on google.

High CPC rate.

Satisfies my usual criteria.

Hand reg'd for $1 last week, sold yesterday for $160

I contacted the buyer by email and had a 'we want it' reply two hours later. A little bit of negotiating before the deal was done. Money direct via paypal so no commission fees.

I felt like I probably could have pushed for me, but as a newbie this is my first 'big' sale so I thought i'd play it safe and just get some money on the board.

Very pleased overall, great profit margin on a very quick flip. My first real taste of success!

Newbie or not, that's a great profit in a short time.
What is it, a 15,900% profit?

I always "hand register" (to use that new term). There will always be scope for registering new names as products, events etc change.

Best sale was LondonToLet.com for ยฃ5,000 GBP in 2000. Also sold LondonEducation.com and LondonWebcam.com for a couple of grand around the same time.

I don't always hand register domains, but when I do, I ask for 5000%+ ROI

The most I've earned on a hand reg? boom.tv registered for $40, sold for $2500
