The day ".net" began

Does anyone remember the day ".net" or ".cc" or ".info" came about?

Was it a big race to buy domains like crazy?

How does one know when the next . extension is going to come out? --

Well I don't know when did these extensions exactly appear and whether there was a domain trade phase during that period. Nevertheless, .NET was known strongly known for companies or sites being the backbone of the internet. But as time passed it's become and ccTLD.

I think your best bet for answers would Wikipedia or may be a Namepros member can shed more light on this topic.

The upcoming domain extensions are .ME .WEB & .ASIA

.net went online in January 1985. I doubt there was a big rush back then.

.net - There was no big rush, I think it took 2 yrs for 100 (combined) .net and .com names to get reg'd, almost all .com

.cc - The best names were taken relatively fast.

.info - Yup, quite a big rush for the best ones for this.

.net is NEVER a cctld. It's a gTLD, and is extremely powerful, second to only .com
