Hey,

I am looking to backorder some names, about 5.

I would immagine they are going to be trying to be grabbed by more people than just myself.

So, How smart (or should I say, how dumb) is it for me to try and do it myself? (I don't have a backorder script)

Or,

What (Who) is your favourite site or person to get dropping names? I am not rich, so I don't want to spend a boatload, and I also don't want to pay unless I get the names.

I'm looking to do it with GoDaddy.com now, but how do I get refunded if they manage not to catch the name?

Any insight is great!

Thanks,

Ryan

My question is, what if GoDaddy (or whatever company you go with) have more than one backorder for the domain? It is just Queued? : /

Octaneinv,

Most of dropping domains are not actually "catched" while being deleted, instead they are bought by backorder companies from their current registrars. That's why names never get deleted in the first place. Backorder companies have exclusivity agreements with partner registrars, and so you have, for instance, that pool.com works with moniker and enom names go to clubdrop.com. Snapnames' got dotster, network solutions, domain site, bulk register and many others, so they get most of the dropping names. I tried to "catch" a couple of names myself too in the beggining. I had no luck at all, and there you have the reason why, although I've heard that backorder scripts might work with some, very few registrars not partnering with those companies. As for godaddy, I've never tried them, but I've heard that they are not good since the only names they are able to get are names registered with them. When they are not successful backordering a domain they don't give you your money back, they just keep it as credit to backorder another name through them. And since it seems it can take forever that they get a domain for you, many people say it's lost money. Like I said, I've never tried them myself, but everytime I've wanted a dropping domain I've placed orders at pool, clubdrop and snapnames at the same time. And I always get the name, or at least get into the auction. Yes, when there's more than one backorder for the same domain, they go into auction. With godaddy, instead, you've got that they always run their expiring names through their auction system. Your backorder is taken as the first bid, so if someone makes another, higher bid later, being the "early bird" does you no good.

If the domain has any value, trying to catch it manually is virtually impossible. If you really want the domain, I recommend you place backorders with the big 3 (SnapNames, Pool, and eNom). They only charge you if you successfully acquire the domain.

With GoDaddy, you can only have 1 backorder for any given domain (their system will not allow more than 1 person to backorder a domain). With the others (eNom, Snap, and Pool), if more than 1 person backorders the domain AND they are succesful in snapping it up, then the domain goes into a PRIVATE auction between those who backordered it only. The highest bidder wins.

Also, you should check and see who the registrar is for the domain you're looking for. Like Chico mentioned above, some of them "pre-release" their expiring domains, where instead of deleting the domain from the registry, the registrar sells it in an open auction. Not all registrars pre-release their domains.
