Does anyone know how to find out whether an available name has been registered at all at some point in the past? (Even if only for a few days.) And, if so, is it possible to find out how long it was registered for?
Thanks,
Andy

try searching it at google "site:domain.com" and another is archive.org see if it's already archived, also on whois.sc there's a whois history that you can check.(for silver membership only) another clue is if it has pr already and also if alexa ranking is low
There are several ways. One is use domaintools.com to check the whois, it tells you if that domain was regged before. Another one is to check archive.org to see if any pages were up in the past.
there's a paid service for domaintools.com if you want your whois information for a particular domain to be not listed so those people who have opted to pay will allow them to remove their whois information and also whois history.

thanks. That's exactly what I needed.
Do you know though, whether the whois history at domaintools.com ever misses domains that have been registered?
Just click on the "Domain Names" icon located on the left hand side of the above page to start your domain name registration history search.
I would start with running a search using "Words in Domain Name" option first. Select "All Names" and "Any Status" options.
If you get too many results try typing in just the domain without the TLD in the box "Exact Domain Name." Then type in the your domain's TLD in the box below this called "Top Level Domain."
This might be the best service available for what you are looking for; but it is not 100% thorough.
