Just got an email from Domain Monster touting the next hot TLD. This extension is just what the doctor ordered. Not.

".tel uniquely uses the DNS system to store universally accessible contact data. It allows you to store, update and publish contact information (phone numbers, web links, addresses, keywords) directly on the internet, anywhere, anytime. Simple, fast and accessible from any device, .tel provides a new internet standard for you to take full control over how and where people reach you or your business."

".tel really is a win-win launch! We won’t take more than 1 Pre-Order for each domain name at each stage of launch, so if you’ve pre-ordered pizza.tel, yours will be the ONLY application we submit to the registry, and it’ll get there within seconds of launch. Furthermore, we’re so confident of success we won’t take any payment until your order has been successfully processed and your .tel domain is live."

Boy how I miss the good ole' days when you registered a .com and got a .net or .org if the .com was taken.

Guess the clock is ticking on this aging domainer. :santa:

Without criticisms from members like Snoop, this website would be completely worthless. IMO.

^ Agreed, and to be honest ... I think we've all lost a little of that very necessary balance (in the form of some of Staff™ being a little too quick to edit and delete members' posts at even the mere hint of a possible ensuing passionate discussion) here of late as well IMHO. :gl:

Regarding the highly brandable .TEL ... my prediction is much the same for the "dot Mobey" in August '06 (but due to the short .TEL's natural brandability, the fallout will be far less in impact and number of bodies):
The majority of very active, prominent .TEL proponents will LEAVE THE BUSINESS, while others will soon liquidate their .TEL portfolios (across multiple venues), IMHO.

Moreover, those with little actual faith in the extension (and their investments) - and thus most prone to be defensive and fearful of the hard, balanced questions and concerns (any myriad of Telnic's potential future struggles, for instance!) that are typically posed by the pros here at #1 Namepros ... would naturally seek safe refuge at a place of common vanity, niche interest - as a form of distraction from (market) reality and avoidance behavior, IMHO. :guilty: :snaphappy:

Just my two sense.

I remember Rick Latona's blog making some reference to searching nearby servers somehow... it made me wonder if it will detect where you are and pull yellow pages information for generic products. For instance, will pizza.tel query where you are and return your local pizza joints? If so I can see a lot more value in this .tld.... but I have yet to be able to get someone to confirm or deny this.

Dot Tel

Well, I have read many reviews on the upcoming launch of the new TLD .tel

I googled ".tel domain" and found that out of the 25 or so reviews which I chose to read (there are hundreds more)... only 2 were negative.. and they weren't even really negative... more like unsure.

It appears that the general concensus is that this will truly revoloutionize the way we communicate with each other. For business' it seems to be a great idea...

Here is a link explaining the benifits of .tel

Let me know what YOU think!

I'm not really certain about them yet. reminds me of .mobi, which flopped IMO.

i'm not sure how a new domain extension could accomplish that. so i disagree. there are 44 different extensions you could choose from. i dont see how .tel stands out from the other exotic ones, or provides a substantive use for someone wanting that extension.

out of all the exotic extensions, i like .tv and .info the best. there is a more pragmatic use

So you will be able to query the data that you see on the web interface directly through the DNS? Interesting.

At least this extension answers the question of how it's different from *tel.com or another extension.

.mobi failed to do this when they failed to guarantee that all domains would resolve to mobile-compatible websites.

A TLD with constraints provides a guarantee about the interface you can expect, making it possible to easily develop software to access the entire namespace.

^ Agreed on both ... at this point, in my experience, it is important to gather as much information as possible regarding the very intriguing, short, and highly brandable .TEL extension IMHO. :gl:
The body count and very costly mistakes made by mTLD and the "dot Mobey" cannot be repeated! :guilty:

Link: http://www.telnic.org

Time to launch: 20 days, 4 hours ... :talk:

In addition, I am predicting an exclusive #1 .TEL sub-forum in the ensuing weeks, as well! :music:
All the best,
-Jeff B-)

PS. Excellent multiple threads "merge" via our #1 Staff™, IMHO. :tu:

Well, telnic.org just confirmed 4 more registrars, bringing the total to 112. They can only make it if they do a massive launch and have .Tel become an actual standard in communications and networking. Going to be difficult.

Why I like .tel

If I read and understood the tutorial on .tel correctly... All info is stored directly in DNS, including keywords for quicker and easier searchability. Company's can have contact info for every location of their business, anywhere on the planet which can be accessed by any device capable of connecting with internet. Eg. If you are on vacation in Timbuktu and want to find a hotel... just type hotel.tel into your blackberry or phone or laptop or whatever and follow links to hotels in Timbuktu.. instantly access the address of the location(s) (including map), website (for further info or reviews etc), fax, phone, email and any other contact details all of which would be "hot linked". I think it would be great for "professionals" eg. lawyers, realtors, doctors, as well.... However, I am not sold on having a .tel for just an average Joe Blow...

A few questions/concerns I havent seen covered in this thread...

1. Can these names be bought and sold on the secondary market? Obviously my first thought was yes but thinking about it, since they aren't out to make money using auctions for premium names then will they allow others too? I mean look at the dotME extension, tons of money was made from the auctions.... just something to see if someone can confirm...

2. Will the renewal rates vary like the .tv extension? I mean say I actually pull a hail mary and get a killer keyword, will my renewal be $50,000 in a few years?

3. I saw someone mention something about a directory of hotels for example, will this even be possible or can it just be one hotel..... from what I have seen it looks like any scripting is going to be impossible apart from the .tel template...

4. Since they are locking down the extension to strictly contact information, will advertising be allowed? just another thought....

My views are still up in the air, I mean say someone ran away with the name, oh, boobs.tel. what is someone supposed to do with that?

SMBGeek: Good questions, I was wondering along the same lines.

1. Yes they can be re-sold in the secondary market.

http://telnic.org/faq.html

Check "Buying.Tel" and then "Can I transfer or sell a .tel name"

2. Don't think so. There are no premium names or auctions. They are probably doing this to ensure the largest possible growth of .tel after launch. They can only make it if they standardize it, and having it widely available with the least amount of restrictions will work to achieve that.

3. It is possible. check www.hotels.tel

You're limited to their template but you can have numerous categories and sub-categories.

http://www.demo.com/demonstrators/demo2008fall/147407.html

Video on the right side.

4. No advertising is allowed. They could probably change this if they wanted to, but I'm sure it would defeat the whole purpose if they did.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/11/06/dot_tel_domain/

Not sure what someone would do with boobs.tel. On domainmonster.com xxx.tel, sex.tel, porn.tel were all registered for landrush, around $450 each.

I suppose all the owners could do is provide links and contact information of porn sites, if .tel really kicked off and became a standard and their sites were receiving a lot of hits they could probably do some under the table deal, or sell their domain to an end-user who would link just their own site.

Check victor.vip.tel for a demo of how it works. I wanted to try the system out, you can register here - http://www.telnic.org/vip/

not sure if I would buy many .tel...but I would sure buy myname.tel....so, if each and every individual buy theirname.tel...the numbers should be significant too!

.tel landrush currently cheapest from Webnic.cc at USD300, provided you are a member, but PM me if you need me to get those name for you. Not sure if any registrar selling lower, cos..at USD300 is still a high price...for myname.tel..sigh!

i book few .tel domain already(General Availability Pre-Order), anyone think .tel domain worth $? do we can use .tel to do advertising business ? like hotels.tel, we let hotel company to advertising their hotel at hotels.tel

•••
Probably. If you own hotels.tel (which is already used by telnic as a sample) you could do some under the table deal to list certain hotels on your site. But that would only work if .Tel blows up and becomes popular and a standard. Who is going to pay you to list their contact information if nobody knows about .tel and if nobody checks hotels.tel.
