Technologies to Watch in 2006
12.27.05

It's already clear that WiMax, WiFi, mesh technology, and almost anything-over-IP will continue to be the prime movers in wireless technologies for 2006. So Unstrung thought it might prove to be more fruitful to visit the nodes less travelled, and highlight five less-hyped technologies that will change the way companies do business over the next 12 months.

Sensor Networks: Think of mesh networks that listen, and then report back, rather than merely provide public connectivity and you get the basic concept. And think small -- very, very small.

Designed to detect otherwise imperceptible changes in air temperature, or in the operation of machinery, these ultra-fine nets function as tiny video "eyes" for many industrial applications. The sensors, often called "motes", are designed to operate for years on batteries, and pass data about the particular states being monitored wirelessly on to a central computer.

The venture capital community is already behind this market with startups like Dust Networks and Ember Corp. grabbing millions in funding. (See Radio Standard Gets Small.) Established semiconductor manufacturers, meanwhile, are looking at adding Zigbee -- a short-range wireless standard that is used for many of these applications -- to their portfolios. (See TI Heats Up Zigbee.)

Practical applications for location technology: Yes, we know that location tracking technology has been around for donkey's years, but, frankly, how often have you really thought of it as anything more than a novelty?

That could change in 2006.

Why? Well for one, if municipal mesh networks really do take off, then network administrators are going to need to figure out how to track a large crowd of scattered clients rapidly joining and leaving these city-wide networks, if only to address the possibility of tracking 911 calls made over such connections.

Then there are actually devices coming that have a practical application for the everyday user. One example: a simple clip-on device that will allow you to record and digitally store notes that you made on a paper notepad. The device will use extremely precise 3D positioning technology that can be used to accurately track tiny movements between a transmitter (in the pen) and a receiver.

Wide-Area Smart Antennas, Take Two: Could smart antenna technolgy give new-fangled wireless broadband technologies such as WiMax -- or, more specifically, its Korean mobile cousin, WiBro -- a performance boost? (See Samsung Mobilizes WiBro.)

The most likely answer is yes, after Samsung Corp. quietly signed a deal with ArrayComm Inc. in early December that will allow it to apply the startup's smart antenna technology across its base station line-up, which includes cellular and WiBro products. ArrayComm's "adaptive array" system uses software to continually map the RF environment covered by an array of antennas and create a better link with each user in the cell

man i'm so tired of this pointless WiBro propaganda.... Like I've told you BEFORE let's touch base in 1 year from now and see how much $$$ you've made..

WiBro and the likes are NOT consumer end products, it's something SPs offer directly to end-users or vendors sell to SPs... Now why would samsung or cingular or nortel or anybody buy any of your stupid a** domains when they just have a page i.e. www.samsung.com/wibro dedicated to the solution...

but you don't get it.... or do you?

We will talk and you will say i was right in 6 months when Wibro launches in the US

I am not planning on selling them---I am going to develop them---

i think you may have forgotten that I mentioned in prev post what my real job is...but anyway, since "you know better" let me just tell you that neither TMO / Cingular / Sprint have in their 2006 plans WiBro.....

Cingular will focus on Conv. Mobility, IMS and improving HSDPA maybe launch commercial UMA with BellSouth / TMO will focus on their UMTS network which they've tendered few months back and Sprint is focusing on IMS, Conv Mobility and EVDO-Rev A...

Let me also point out that Samsung is NOT an infrastructure provider to ANY of those SPs, let me ALSO point out that Intel which is pushing for WiMax and will have embedded chipsets in Q306 HAS NOT endorsed WiBro..... but please let's stop this pointless conversation right now because YOU know better ;)

Let me clarify I have no WIMAX, HSDPA, IMS, or ANY TECH-RELATED domains, I'm just tired of your propaganda and meaningless posts.

PS sorry if I use tech terms that you probably have to look up on WiKipedia ;) then again I might be wrong cause you're WiBro Guru LOL

I take it you are the CEO of Sprint or Samsung and you know what you are going to launch in 2006-07.

no you should take that I'm in Senior Strategy position at a tier-1 Vendor who is also their strategic supplier and I happen to work with them 24/7 so if you want to place a bet I'm ready for it...

No offense Maroulis... And I agree, much of the hype over WiBro is unwarranted.. but there's no need to be a JackA$$.
All you have here is a person who is excited over his speculation into a technology that he thinks will be big. It's not hurting anyone. Just because you may be on the "up & up" with certain technologies doesn't mean that it's worthless reading to everyone. I could care less about WiBro and I think it has been run into the ground, but it might be interesting to someone.
It's in the same category as some person that's been into domaining much longer than you have.. shooting down any and every post you have on the business of domains.

Give the guy a break.

capiche - no offense taken...

if you search his posts you'll see that 90% of them are on WiBro.. .The way I see it I'm giving him FREE advice because I care about this community more than others as it appears..

As for the Jackass comment, I've tried numerous times in previous posts to let him know that there's no value in being a speculator especially as he has no insight into the telco industry and apparently he didn't get it... All his posts pertain around the same issue WiBro which I'm tired of reading and NO I won't sit around and wait for another Newbie to come around and snatch one of his domains for $500 because they are ignorant... If these posts where under the SALE thread I'd keep my mouth shut but being that they are in general reading area I'm entitled to my opionion which also happens to be very correct from realistic point of view given I have "insider info" as some would say....

Likewise I'd love if people who were experts on one domain/topic where to point out to Newbies why they might be wrong. There are two ways learn and one of them is the hard way.. I could let him spend $Ks on WiBro domains only to let drop in 12 months or I can warn him that this is BS and divert his monies to a more appropriate domain

btw capiche - funny that you list WiFi* domains in your signature ;) I bet you're making a killing with those...wouldn't you be happier if I "bashed" at you how stupid this might be and saved you a few bucks?

Bash at me all you want. I registered the WiFiDS name because of Nintendo DS WiFi, and it does get traffic, and it does get clicks. Not a fortune, no.. but we can't win them all.. (Sorry, I won't include you in that) Maybe YOU can.
Anyway, I don't have anything to hide. I don't pretend to be the most knowledgeable person when it comes to domains, but I know what I'm talking about most of the time. Unlike a lot of people on these forums, I've actually sold some domains, (you may have too), but a person can use certain indicators as to whether he registers valuable names or not. And I'm happy with most of my decisions thus far.
If you can sit there and say every registration you've made has been a winner.. even within the last year.. you're full of it.
We could go into critiquing each other's names all night.. but that won't do any good. I'm sure I can find some of yours that are more than "gay". But I won't go there.
It just bothered me mainly because you called his names "stupid a$$".. Was that really warranted.. even if they were "not so good"? I don't think so.

like I said LESSON LEARNT - Ignorance is a bliss in this wolrd - will keep my mouth shut from now and let you get on w/your domains.... let's NOT encourage conversation in forums and turn this into a one post per thread forum.. it'd be great..

I wish NamePros had a subscription fee of $200 / year then it would clean a lot of these useless threads and posts...

PS the stupid a$$ commented was unwarranted I give you that but like I said I've mentioned to him specifically 1 million times to STOP Excaggerating WiBro and have Newbies disillusioned.. In one specific thread with 10 posts 7 were his claiming how GREAT wibro is and what a killer domain portfolion he has..

sure end users may not buy it however manufacturers that want a nice domain will most likely buy them from him. don't be jealous that you didn't get the domains.

All I'm trying to say Maroulis, is that constructive criticism is good.. slamming and flaming peoples names isn't good.
There are better ways to do this.
Like someone said long ago, "Can't we all just get along?"

Anyway.. Moving...... on.

Cheers

i think the point of ps3 and revolution and also the products of HD will be arising in 2006.

With the cell and intel coming up with all these processors it could hit about 4.3ghz for computers. I also believe apple has something to show us in next weeks CES
