TDNAM clearance and drop?

Once the auction ends on TDNAM, if there is no bidder, then does it go on the clearance section soon after, like the next day? There were some domains that I thought I saw on auction ($10) with no bids that I couldn't find on the site in the following days. Also, if it's on clearance and nobody buys, then does it always just drop about a week later? (Of course it might not become available if someone used a drop service.)

They go to $5 bin within 10 seconds up to 5 minutes after the normal auction ends with no bid. A great deal of the time, they get snapped up instantly, once it goes to the $5 bin.

The best way to do this if you are interested in a domain is to add it to your watch list. If no one bids on the domain by the time the auction ends then you get an email from Tdnam informing you it is still available. You then have the opportunity to purchase at either $10 or $5 (cannot remember price for sure).

Ah, that explains it.

Don't think I have ever gotten an email on one, hm. Very good to know also.

+Rep to both FWIW.

Names do not necessarily go to the $5 BIN if they do not get a bid at $10. I have gotten numerous different (wrong) replies to the question by Godaddy employees as to why some names do not go to the Firesale BIN. I have been told that it is because people have a backorder on it. The problem with this is that if you put a backorder on a name before it goes to TDNam, it gets a bid and shows a bid the whole time. If you try to place a backorder after the auction starts (the second resonse given), they do not let you place the backorder. My guess is that some names are worth so much that TDNam refuses to sell them at $5. The best solution would be to bid at $10 rather than hoping to snag it at $5, if you really want the name.

I would be interested to hear if anyone knows why some names never make it to the $5 BIN, even though they get zero bids.

If the name does not go to closeouts it is because it has a backorder on it. It won't show as having a bid either. Once the auction ends, it is automatically caught for the one person who placed the backorder.

The only time I successfully placed a backorder on a Godaddy name, it went to the TDNam auction for 10 days and showed my bid for the whole world to see, for the entire 10 days. When I asked Godaddy, they said that if you place a backorder on a name, then the bid is supposed to show up. So, I am then wondering why no bid shows up for them.

That is why you should add it to your watchlist. If you do this you will get offered the domain after the auction ends on a buy it now basis if there have been no bids.

What watchlist are you talking about? I don't get any emails in regards to my TDNam watchlist. I also do not seem to have any watchlist on Godaddy that I can add TDnam names to.

This is supposed to happen. The backorder bid should be shown. Another possibility is that the original owner decides to renew the domain and it is withdrawn from the sale.

The watchlist is a feature on your Tdnam account. You have to be signed into the account to use the feature.

I would say at least 20% of the names I watch that get no bids at $10 do not make it to the $5 BIN. They are not reclaimed, do not seem to be backordered, and do not get any bids. For some reason they just stay on my TDNam watchlist as ended with 0 bids at $10.

I know about that watchlist, but they certainly do not email me. Also, the question is more about the names that don't make it to the $5 BIN, not about catching names as soon as they enter the bin.

Thanks for trying :)

Sleepys, yeah this is what I was noticing and wondering as well, and why I started this thread. I'm not discounting the possibility that the other explanations given here DO account for every domain situation I've seen, but it does seem 'suspicious' to me, in the same ways you say. As if some are being sold off in one other way before they go to clearance. I wish they would email me about the watchlist domains also.

If you place a backorder with GoDaddy before the auction starts, then your backorder will be the first bid at the auction. If you place a backorder after the auction starts, it's not placed as a bid in the auction but the backorder is executed after the auction ends and the firesale begins.

Don't ask me why anyone would want to place a backorder after the auction has begun. Because they have no change of getting the domain if anyone bids on it at auction. If they are banking on no bids, then why not just wait for it to go to the firesale for $5.

That is another explanation I have gotten from a different Godaddy employee. It would make sense, except for one very important factor. It is not possible. Have you ever tried to place a backorder on a name after its auction has already started on TDNam? It is not allowed by Godaddy. Once a domain goes onto TDNam, a backorder is not longer possible. If you try, Godaddy will put an X through the box that would normally be available for backorders and instead of giving the price of the backorder, it says "Not Available". Please try it if you have not. This means that these names that don't go to the $5 BIN can not possibly have been backordered after the auction started.

Actually, it is. And I do it frequently. You must purchase a stand alone backorder and then assign it to a domain name. Requesting to backorder a domain name through the checkout system, wont work. This is exactly why some domains don't go to the closeouts. If when youve purchased a backorder and then assign it it doesnt allow you, it means someone else has already backordered it in the system. Thus, you should bid because it wont drop to BIN.

Actually 100% of all names on TDNam show up as unavailable to backorder for me. Many that are unavailable to backorder do go to the $5 BIN.

Maybe my Godaddy interface is broken :'(

Are you purchasing a lone backorder first? Then once the backorder credit is in your account then assigning it to a domain name?

Oh, ok, I was just checking it the normal way on Godaddy, by entering the name in the search. Normally, if the name is not on TDNam, it offers you the backorder. So, I need to purchase a backorder on nothing, to be used in the future. Then I can apply it to a name that is already on TDNam, that way?

Thanks a lot for helping to explain. +Rep (can't add another, but thanks)

Just curious Justin. What benefit do you gain by backordering a domain which is on auction? Why not just wait for the firesale? Why not just snipe it? Or bid on it normally?
