I recently registered a new domain http://www.talk-movies.com
The version that I really wanted talkmovies.com had already been registered and I could not get my hands on it.

Do you think that I might loose on traffic by people accidently going to talkmovies.com instead of talk-movies.com? Should I try to get a different domain name that might not bring such confusion?

I do not think so, becuase talkmovies is not developed. When you advertise put in Talk-Movies instead of Talk Movies and you will be fine.

yes, you'll lose traffic inherently... get a different domain or be satisfied with the lost traffic, upto you really.

I disagree. TalkMovies.com is not a running site. If someone tried to visit it and knew about site they would think, "Oh wait its talk-movies.com" i do not think it is that big of a deal.

Are you really planning on word of mouth or other media advertising?

That's where the hyphen/no-hyphen (irony?) matters. Otherwise, SEO be dammed, the only thing you have to worry about is the site being a huge hit and the non-hyphenated version of your site playing holdup for the domain.

Haven't thought about what kind of advertisement I will do.
Yeah, there is always that fear that if the site becomes somewhat sucessfull, the other version of the domain would suddenly come live to try to ride on some of the success.

I did the same thing with http://www.talk-gaming.com
talkgaming.com was already taken so I signed up for talk-gaming.com

I hope I won't live to regret this decision :D

you are contributing free traffic and donating your ads money
for free to the talkmovies. Whoever (talkmovies or talk-movies)
spent the least will benefit the most in this case.

Even talkmovies.com is domain that will only likely receive few monthly clicks.

So to minimise leaked traffic, do the following as with any developed hyphen domain:

Mention the hyphen clearly in all Adverts, google etc.
Show the hyphen clearly on your header/logo.
Add a nice clear 'Add to Favorites' / Bookmark this Page' in a prominent place.

Initially you will doing a PPC campaign so the hypehn wont matter. After that, cregular customers will bookmark the page anyway.
You will always get somebody who will type in the non-hyphen when aiming to return to your site but they will soon spot the difference especially if your site is full of relevant content..
