SwapNames.com Has Gone LIVE!
4th Of July 2007

Hi all!

Finally! I am announcing to the public for the first time that SwapNames.com has gone LIVE. It has been too long and too expensive but finally ..phew!

For fellow NPers who are not sure about what SwapNames is, pls check out the thread here.

I hope everyone now can start "trading-up" their domains or portfolio freely and safely in this new marketplace. Remember Kyle MacDonalds started with "One Red Paper Clip" and traded it up to a house, 14 trades later..or...

Andres Kellos started with One Ugly Domain and today he owns something worth hundreds of dollars (or maybe thousands) and the monster is STILL growing!

Now everyone can have their VERY OWN domain swapping listings...and it is FREE!

I would like to personally invite all forumers to try out our domain industry's latest offering now so pls click here to check it out.

Thanks and Happy Domain Swapping!

Out, Al.

PS: SwapNames in currentlly in Beta Version 1.0 and we will be launching Beta 2 next week. We will only be announcing a press release after the Beta 2.0 launch, so get ready for more to come!

Looks interesting but I couldn't find a sufficient answer on how to swap. In the faq's it says:
I have accepted a swap offer. What is the next step?
Once you have accepted a swap offer, a confirmation email will be sent to both parties in the swap process. You will be required to contact the other swap party to make arrangements for both the transfer

The problem is, how do you actually swap the domain? If you send off the domain how do you know the other person will send you his domain? Maybe he will just run away with your domain.

You should take a small fee from both parties and accept the domain in your account. Then you should push the domain to the other party.

Paypal should be used to add funds to accounts. Also you should publish a list of known registrars that are accepted. You can not operate with every single registrar but you can do with the 20 biggest, a system smillar to sedo's.

I agree, I probably wouldn't be inclined to use a site like that if there wasn't some sort of service like the above mentioned. In a small forum community like NP it's not too much of a problem to simply trust the other person, but on a site much like sedo I wouldn't use the service without some sort of security.

Hi MarcelProust..
You will actually have to contact your swap partner and do the swap with him/her yourself. In the future, we might have a swap-escrow if its feasible.

As with many swap sites (physical items like SwapAce.com) it is the same that members will have to do the swap themselves. The same goes with sites like Ebay or the forums, where members are protected only by the feedback/reputation system. That is why SwapNames have a good feedback system and we are still upgrading it.

The idea of SwapNames is for domainers with names that they are stuck with and need to dispose off. I myself might not swap big names that I own without proper trust but I will DEFINITELY swap 95% of my other so-so names and even if I lose them in the swap process, it is ok. But still, I will use the feedback system to protect me.

Thanks for your feedback!

Al.

In life there aren't many things that make you as happy as seeing an idea becoming reality. I too think its great to see swapnames live. I think your strongest point is your name.

Maybe the escrow service could be optional. This way you can still keep he ratings system, which is a good system, but for risky transactions or high value domains you can use escrow. This is like paying with paypal for low value forum purchases and useing escrow for others. I wouldn't mind paying a few bucks for such an escrow.

Does your feedback system work like ebay's? Can I see a domainers previous domain swaps. I need to see with whom he traded so I can decide whether they were genuine swaps or fake. Always check feedback at ebay. They are buying $0.01 ebooks just to get feedback.

We are planning this for bigger names (swap-escrow) but that part will set us back for another month or so, so we decided to go ahead without this. We are not anticipating swap-escrow to be a hit with SN because we cannot charge $2-$3 per swap transaction and if its $10/transaction, then nobody will use them. So until SN is getting BIG names wanting to swap, then we will introduce the service.

Yes, I fully agree. SN has to really take care of it's members. We have feedback rating system that shows comments, previous transaction details, ratings, etc...just like Ebay's.

Thanks Lau & Vurg! Hope you snag lots of trade-ups there!

BTW peeps... SlotsDeal.com, LonelyDreams.com, ManagingPPC.com and a few CVCV.com are up for swaps...just do a search for the names and make your offers fast before someone else get to them!

Happy Swapping!

Al.

The more I look at your website the more I like it. I think its cute.

I found a small glitch and want to give some feedback:
When making a search you can choose the lenght in characters. Unfortunately the applet counts the dot and the extension as well.

For instance it counts a LLLL.com domain as 8 characters. Try yourself. Choose exactly 8 characters to see 4 character domains and 9 characters to see 5 character domains etc.

WOW! thanks for that! Coders notified and working on it. Cheers!

Hello,
I signed up. Looks good so far except that the registration confirmation email was marked as spam by gmail. If there was any window at the end of registration that warned to me of an upcoming confirmation email than the window must be too easy to miss. I think this is normal for new websites and gmail might correct this after a while but keep an eye on it. It might be also because the link was longer than the text message.

When I complete registration I don't read all the things. I just click, click and complete. I didn't even realize I had to confirm en email or an email was send. If you want email confirmation I suggest that you make it so that the user has no way of missing the information that a confirmation email was send.

Maybe a count down timer of 10 seconds can be considered with the message "please wait. confirmation email is being send" If I have to wait 10 seconds then I'm definatly going to look around on what happens.

Also I realized that domains per page on the search page can me maximum 100. This setting is for kids. Snapnames uses 100 names per page as well and I hate them for doing this. When I work on domains I do countless different checks to them and I need the whole list. Right now there are only 2 pages but in the future I would hate to go through all the pages and copy them. Let's make this at least 500. Even godaddy has 500.

Cheers mate.

Hi Marcello...

Very good suggestions again! But the 500 domains on ONE page? mmm.... got to check if it will take eternity to load. Thanks again and hope you are already doing swaps in SwapNames..

Today I notice there were some VERY nice names listed at the site, the advance search is ready, so guys & gals, help yourselves!

Best, Al.

I listed one to give it a try! So far, only Downgrade swap offers.

If a Person Owns CompanyManager.com why would they trade it for icheaphotel.com etc.

I can see getting crappy domains sent all the time, but i hope not.

I must say, the registration was really easy and nice. Definitely a great feature of the site.

I too had the gmail spam folder problem, but I don't know how you could stop that from happening :(

edit: one tiny little thing I'd change is when browsing categories, could you set it to go to "show all" by default, not "A-D"? I always end up thinking "that's not a lot of domains" when I browse categories, as it always takes me a second or two to realise they're not all displayed.

That said, I do really like the site :)
