I want to buy 2 or 3 thousand names, then flip them in an auction. I appraised one through GoDaddy, which cost me $15 for an express appraisal. They said their best price for registering bulk quantities of names was $7.29 . Any suggestions on a better price for appraising, registering, or ideas on what I want to do ? Thanks

Again, I appreciate most of the comments. Several said to do my homework. I thought that this is part of doing my homework. I questioned GoDaddy people, and they assured me that my request for appraisal would not be public. Someone said that I would be investing 20K to 30K. What am I missing. If I buy 2,000 names that cost $7.29 each, how does my initial investment get in the tens of the thousands. As far as the trademark, copyright issue is concerned, I consulted with an attorney who specializes in this area. I have owned several businesses in the past, and I am in the process of starting two at the present time. I own a condo on the beach in Destin Florida, a home in Atlanta, and a home in Dallas. I am by no means rich, and I do not throw away money. My plan B, if the names I buy do not sell, is to sit on them. I am not after the quick buck, but I feel certain that this is one of those times that this is possible. One person said, " If this is such a great idea, why hasn't anyone else done something with it? " Could it be possible that it is a goldmine of an idea that no one else saw?

There is a reason those 2-3 thousand names are not registered. Take your prefix all by itself and tack a ".com" to it. Is it registered? How many google results are there for your prefix?

The person that said 20-25 k was rounding up a bit depending on which place you register it, but you still would have to pay more than half that so it not like its so far off to highlight it.

"no one else saw" no, instead it would be "one one else registered" people have disected everything .com

Plan B siting on them is actualy the main problem, before you know it your regging it for a third year.

Sounds like you can financially take a stab at it, goodluck

Plan B = renewals and they sting badly after a few years but if you can do this, great.

Available .coms have been searched over many times and cherry picked. If you are looking for new registrations of value you may wish to research the drops and then maybe you will find a few golden nuggets.

Not saying there are not nuggets left out there because things happen and change daily.

I personally think some cctlds are a good bet but thats me. You have to find your area of interest.

All that said I really do wish you the best of luck and lots of $ profit

:)

The problem is that you seem to trust appraisals which are worthless. Sorry, but they are crap. Let's call a spade a spade.
How come people are so trusting just because GoDaddy tells you so ? :-/
BTW, if they told you your names are worth no more than reg fee, would you order many other appraisals from them ? No way, they will tell you want you want to hear. They need customers that will register more domains.

What am I missing.
Probably a lot at this point :red:

You mean liability.

Only a tiny percentage of existing domain names do sell at some point.
The vast majority are worthless to any person other than the owner.
The most reasonable is to assume that your domains will never sell, I actually recommend to only purchase you are prepared to develop, because most actually won't sell.
A bad name does not turn into a good name just because it has 'matured' for 10 years. It will just rest on your hands until you stop wasting money on renewal.

The domaining industry is full of people waiting for a big paycheck that will never materialize, because the supply is much higher than demand.
You need to think hard about how your portfolio will produce a revenue stream.
You said you want to team up with investors, they will want results, not losses. So what's your business plan ?

It's not about quantity but quality. If you have $20,000 to invest, pick 5 premium domains instead, not 2000.
The return will be better and you know you will they will be worth something.

Ok I had had to pull out the calculator lol

(He really said 20K to 25K)

the middle of your range of names you wanted to register from your original post=2500

Godaddy tacks on icann fees to the 7.29 which brings it up to a final price of $7.47

2500 x 7.47 = 18,675

$18,675 looks like tens of the thousands to me

Thanks for the information everybody. I think I now know what to do. I will have my patent attorney research around 100 names. If they pass his muster, I will buy them, sit on them for 60 days, then, sell them. Could I advertise that these names will be available in 60 days on ebay ? Anyone see any problem with that ? Has anyone done that before ? If yes, what were the results ? I have to go to a Helicopter Expo in Houston next week, then, to a roofing show in New Orleans. So, it will be week after next before I can do anything with this idea.

Buy one or two real good helicopter or roofing names

Why sit on them 60 days? might as well sell em the same day, 60 days wont change anything

ebay is where you sell your $7,49 name for $1,64

could hand out flyers at the expos

i do think you need to take a stab at it, 100 sounds like a good number, good luck

I said sit on them 60 days because I thought someone said I have to hold them for 60 days. So, I can buy them, and flip them the same day ? I have decided to buy a minimum of 100 names. Can I put them for sale on several sites, and what is the charge to put them up for sale ? What are everybodys recommendations for selling ? Again, I appreciate all of the feedback . As I said in the bedinning, I am in the dark here. If there was one person who knows what they are doing regarding selling domains, who is that person. I would love to give them my idea, let them run with it, and give my a percentage. I look forward to hearing from all of you. Thanks
