Vox Populi, the registry in contention for .sucks, plans to charge businesses $25,000 to pre-register their trademarks during a 30-day Sunrise period and will be charging $25,000 per year renewals:

and

Where is ICANN, anyway?

This is the worst kind of extortion against bonafide TM holders. I expect the courts will weigh in on this.

Side note: Rick Schwartz has registered VoxPopuliSucks.com:

I suspect that Vox Populi is headed for the Domain Hall of Shame.

A lot of people involved in the Domain Industry, are criminals. It's not surprising.

just one of many screwed up things you are going to see now, and going forward.

if I were a TM holder I would just wait it out or maybe try to get an injunction to not have them even released.

if big business were smart they would get together with a class action suite against all the new gtld's and get an injunction not allowing them to release their respected TM names.

this new release of extensions is extortion to every one and every business. doesn't matter if its $10 a name/y or $25,000 per name annually.

This is exactly one of the main reasons why I think the new gTLD program is a mistake.
Of course there is the TM clearing house too, but this is still extortion.

I see 4 (possibly more) business models for these new extensions

1. Cater to micro niche's using the new extensions (app, forum, photo, ceo, lol, etc)
2. Compete head on with the existing gtld's (web, etc.)
3. Buy a vanity extension for products or shortener for existing companies(.IBM, .google, .coke, etc)
4. Extort or capitalize on existing businesses by selling new extensions to protect their brand and TM

Definition of extortion:
1. to secure (money, favours, etc) by intimidation, violence, or the misuse of influence or authority
2. to obtain by importunate demands

Etymology: 16th Century: from Latin extortus wrenched out, from extorquฤ“re to wrest away, from torquฤ“re to twist, wrench.

Those who think this definition fits on this behavior please raise your hands.

.Sucks is certainly extortion, I don't think a $10 extension is, it may not be needed but at least they are trying to do something with legit business practices. There are end users that call domainers extortionists every day too, just insert which word you like with who.

New Gtlds are Not Needed says old gtld domainers.

Domainers are Not Needed says those running established businesses.

.Sucks takes it to a level that makes anyone disgusted who is not running the .sucks registry.

isn't easier for TM holders to ignore these TLDs?

TM holders are afraid of free speech hijacking their brand names that end in .sucks. Bad publicity is not desirable for any businessman.

I just don't know why free speech cheapos would spend $25,000 to ruin a brand, when you can spend reg fee on a "putbrandhere+sucks.COM".

It probably wouldn't be a disgruntled customer working alone.
It could be angry customers of one company, backed by the marketing dept of another.
E.g. banks or mobile companies battling it out, etc.

Check out the bad tactics / publicity for reputation services.

You mean well-moneyed lobbyists, and Tea Party members.

But then again, why spend $25,000 on a .sucks extension when you can get a lot cheaper moving the word "sucks" before the dot, and just get a com/net/org/info for just reg fee ??

I am guessing there will be the check out phase(type in address bar) every know company place and thing dot sucks when sucks goes live. Might be worth 25k to some. Surely not us 'domainers' Just pure comedy factor + teen age thinking should get visits on the right keywords.

I don't see why any person (domainer or regular joe) would pony up $25,000 just to have a sucks site that can not generate any income (im assuming if they put up any ads on the site it would infringe on trade marks)

smart thing for these corps to do is not bother with them until the extension goes bankrupt.

No one can use a TM.sucks etc because the word sucks is an extension.

I can reg PepsiSucks.com because it is my opinion but in order to retain my .sucks I would have to reg PepsiSucks.sucks to make it my opinion. .sucks guys are dummies who thought they were smart.

I think the Registry run by criminals, thought that the TM holders will scoop up .suck domains of their brand during Sunrise period, to shield them from First Amendment protesters who might plan on ruining their brand names with all sorts of freedom of speech websites.
