I'm going to write a blog post about the Top 10 mistakes a domain investor can make; if anyone wants to contribute then please make your suggestions below!

They can be anything related to domain names. I'll use the best ones in the article - crediting you, of course.

Using no. of searches /month and estibot value as the only criteria when scouting for available domains to register.

Not fully utilizing all necessary info that factor into creating a decent domain name, such as tld relevance, age, characters, sustainability etc etc

Years ago, when I was a noob, buying vvebbooks.com at Pool, when I thought I was buying webbooks.com.

I keep it as a reminder.

In some fonts, lower case vv looks like w.

I am very careful now...

Not setting a limit for investment or trading.

Get carried away and end up investing more only to sell the good ones for a break-even.

Get rich quick/ lottery mentality. Always listing for high sale prices

Not marketing enough for sales.

Bad judgement on technology related domains (overkill)

Obviously TM, Typo while in a hurry.

My biggest mistake is investing in domains and just sitting on them without making enough sales effort.

Also I've made the mistake of not selling off trendy domains before the trend faded out. If you have a trendy domain and you're not sure how long the trend will last (fad) then get what you can out of it before the rush is over.

Winning a Namejet Pre Release auction. Agreeing on a Sale 5 days after. And not being able to sell it because of the 42 day lock...lol.

I've got a ton more. But this is a start.

Probably not advertising my names enough and rather taking a passive approach .. waiting for offers. Much better to invest a little into advertising, branding and building an email list you can sell to when you have some good names. Or go out and contact companies.

Ladies and gents, I do believe we have a winner!

:xf.eek:
It was on 1996-2000 something like that I believe, I owned the domain for a startup I had, didn't realise the value of the domain itself back then :(

1) Forgetting that the world outside the USA is HUGE.
2) Forgetting that there are always several paths to success and some are only slightly worn.
3) Leverage what you know best, regardless of what anyone else might say about it.

Starting out and registering all types of rubbish and needed drop mid $x,xxx when renewals came round. Wasting $xxx on GoDaddy websites building out a few domains... what a rip off... (wordpress.org will give you unlimited websites and try building them out yourself)

I was very fortunate to make acquaintance with Adam Dicker a very experience dominer and worked on a job with him and learned a lot. I have finally broke even.

Another thing don't rush register the new Gtlds land rush unless you know exactly what you are doing... After the first year a lot will drop with annual renewals more realistic and plan to build or hold 5yrs+ and look at the ROI factoring renewals. Anther mistake I had made only lucky I didnt register too many and let 2 drop.

I have learned selling domains sub $1k with GoDaddy premium (largest market place) you will get significantly more sales than unrealistic pricing. Leave some money on the table for the buyer and you may get more sales when they on-sell...

Make a plan, keep to a budget and read, read, read (all domain blogs) and never be afraid to ask for advice from those who have proven track record with sales. There are a lot of very experienced domainers here on NP.

Have fun and don't put people down for their mistakes as you would have been there at some stage... Together we can all achieve more!!!

Nicely stated!

When I admitted to making my vvebbooks mistake, I wrote about it on my blog, in an attempt to warn others of the font pitfalls -- you know, a public service sort of thing.

Some anonymous doofus called me a not-very-nice name...

We all make mistakes, but if we learn from them, that's a positive outcome.

If one doesn't make a few errors along the way, then one isn't trying hard enough.

:)

Well said, like i said above you learn by doing. No book, person or online courses can teach you what you will learn by doing it yourself and making mistakes. But all that said always ask questions and other peoples opinions and be willing to take their advice :)
