Strategy to buy remaining domains to complete the set?

Hi folks. Need some advice here... I'm not much of a domainer, so this may be a newbie question but here goes.

Several years ago, I had the foresight to register some domains that are closely related to each other -- there are about 20 of them in the set. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough foresight to register all 20, so currently I own 11 of them while the other 9 are owned by 5 different people (they own 3, 3, 1, 1, 1).

A couple of these domains could sell for mid to low $x,xxx on their own, while the bottom of the bunch would be about $xxx alone. I'm assuming that if I "collect all 20", the value of the whole set would be greater than the sum of their individual values. So I've been thinking about acquiring the 9 domains that are owned by others. Only one of the domains is actively being used, and it's one of the lower valued ones.

What is the best way to get the 9 domains at a reasonable cost? What strategies can I use to try to overcome the possibility that one of the owners will hold out and demand an astronomical price?

Any tips would be appreciated.

I think that you should use a good friend, who lives a long way from you, or another country / state, so the owner canot link you to friend.

Then find there details, offer them / ask to sell. I think from your post, that you know how much thay are worth

If thay know that you are related, the price will go up up up ! Good luck.

First of, Welcome to NamePros. Secondly, I suggest to check this thread "Charly" posted a list of useful links regarding selling, negotiating, valuation, etc. I am sure you can find some answers to your questions there. Good Luck!

I am not sure I agree with your premise - that the "set" is worth so very much more than the singles. Domain owners are funny - they will ignore offers, or reply with huge prices, and then a couple months or years later let the name drop.

If you are keeping the names, you could try making offers on the others, you might get lucky, but with 5 different owners the chances of pulling the whole set together without overpaying badly is small. But watch them - one or more could drop and you get them for very little.

The domain market has two price levels - often called re-seller and end-user. The end user prices are often 20 or more times the reseller prices --- but it can take a decade to find that end user. Re-seller prices are what someone in the business would pay for the name if he is looking to buy that type of name but does not need that specific domain.

I fear your plan would have you buying at end-user prices and perhaps ending up selling at re-seller prices.
