Last year, I was chasing this domain name iama.com
It was expired (but not dropped) and was not listed on any of the expired domain auction websites (as far I know). I waited for almost six months and the domain just would not drop. It was registed with Network Solutions.
So one day, to my surprise, the domain was renewed but this time it had Domain Whois Privacy enabled and I couldn't see who the owner is
Fast forward today and the domain is now owned by Reddit

The previous owner must have gone through some life ending tragedy for not renewing this domain and let it just expire
