I snapped a name LNL (de) and didn´t know its the short name of a stock from an international company.
Listed at a stock exchange
Should I worry about Trademark issues and just delete the site ?

I would never think of LNL an acronym for a stock exchange company.

See http://www.acronymattic.com/LNL.html for possible uses of LNL (not my site).

In this case, I think it depends HOW you use the domain. Obviously, if you create a site that is confusingly similar to the stock exchange company, you will be inviting trouble.

Also, if you park it, make sure that no LNL stock exchange ads appear on it.

This is just an opinion, and I'm not a lawyer, so maybe some more knowledgeable folks will weigh in.

Acronym Finder has 0 verified definitions for my name.
Its a letter,number,letter.

But I think you are right with all your points and I have to think again what todo with this site in the future.

Don´t know if thats possible if I park it at Sedo or so.

Oops!

:cy:

I thought that was the actual domain.

Still, I would give the same advice, if all else is equal (for example, term is not widely known).

Thanks for your reply.
I personally believe there are many who owns a site with a stock name.
They just don´t know it. So thats the risk I see with registering such short urls.
Of course I checked the Trademark databases but this name wasn´t found and there is no history in archive.org. The .com is for sale at Sedo I believe.

Unless it is "confusingly similar" you are fine. Just don't use it in an infringing way.

Would you use such a name as domain portfolio ?
I´m sure I will get some visitors who are looking for capital investment. :)

For a portfolio site? Sure

I just checked the ticker symbols of stocks I own in .COM and only 1 is owned by the company. Unless you are really trying to infringe you are fine.

There is normally more than 1 use for short acronyms. It general it is going to be a lot harder to claim exclusive use over a short acronym than a longer one.

Bank of America owns BAC.com, at the same time if it was owned by someone like "Baltimore Athletic Club" there is not much they could do legally about it. It would not be infringing in any way.

A stock ticker symbol per se is not a trade or service mark unless the company uses it as a trade or service mark.
