This is a generic term first. Here's the TM lookup for "staples":

You will see that the Office Supply Chain by the same name does not hold the TM for the little thing you pierce through paper, but for catalog and furniture sales.

In this case, plural is definitely better. You don't buy a staple, you buy a box of staples. And just the fact that it is the name of a major corporation adds value (see staples.com).
