So the latest news article is on Serene Branson and her momentary speech problem on air. She's getting searched like crazy. I went to see if she owned her own domain or if it was a squatter. It was regged yesterday, as soon as the news broke, and here is what's on it:

this domain is for sale -- over 10,000 visits in past 12 hours from 29 countries... could be yours! was originally setup for a Branson, MO tourism site, but things have changed since Epic grammy news report fail.

Notice the huge lie - originally set up for a tourism site, ha ha. Since it was regged right after the grammy news report, there's no way it could have been set up as a tourism - or any - site before that.

These dad-burned squatters keep proving to the rest of the non-domaining world that domainers are scummy and underhanded. Try to stop, okay?

Sigh _\|/_

The sad thing is, many times the squatters are not even domainers, just uneducated opportunists who know nothing about domains.

It always bothers me to see this. It does give us all a bad name, and I do agree that most of these people are not even domainers, just people looking to make a quick buck off a quick situation

Yes...and unfortuantely, sometimes they are just outright pond scum domainers who give us all a bad name.

That's nothing. Check out the market for the "...is dead" series.

For example: michaeljacksonisdead . com (regged 7 years ago)

michaeljordanisdead . com (already regged evenif the guy is still alive)

put your favorite celebrity here + "isdead", then check it out if it's still available.

Last time i checked, hosnimubarakisdead is still available. Who knows? lol.

i tend to think many of the squatters would never visit somewhere like this forum

Or if they do, at least not make their presence known.

I guess we have to face the reality, that in a commercialized free-market environment under capitalism, the only point of argument is whether something is LEGAL or ILLEGAL.

As long as the domain is legally owned, then it doesn't matter whether owning it is "morally" right or wrong.

Capitalism has no conscience. Only legislation (setting a list of rules) is what keeps it in order. If you are not breaking any rules, then you should be fine. Sad... but that's it.

That's just really very sad. And, you can see through whois that their are a few people who stockpile these names. It's akin to Death Pools which, believe it or not, have become very popular.

I don't think anybody really cares about this sort of thing because it doesn't directly affect them.

The general public is always going to have a hatred of domainers for two reasons that do effect them. If you are reading something bad about domainers online, there is about a 98% chance it falls under one of two categories:

1. They for whatever reason don't renew a domain and want it back, but we've already scooped it up and want $X for it.

2. Someone wants a domain, but a domainer (labeled a squatter) has it and wants $X for it.

Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do to combat these complaints due to the nature of the industry.

Here's the next one:
A new TV series has been advertised for about 2 - 3 weeks now; I've been watching to see if/when anyone regs the name. Someone just regged it a couple days ago, parked at Godaddy.

The name of the new show is:
Outrageous Kid Parties

the dot.com taken. Strange the creators of a new and well-hyped show didn't reg the domain name for it themselves...

I think those of us in the business underestimate how long it takes for technical knowledge to penetrate. I've had two recent experiences that illustrate that.

I'm talking to the main electronics guy at a local Costco today and comment on the fact they now sell a boxed system with two 23" monitors. In the conversation I find out that while he is thinking of doing some website stuff, he has no idea of what AdSense is or how you might use it to make money online.

A friend has been a commercial mortgage broker and hard money lender for 20 years. Very bright, very able but had no idea small websites could earn significant money.

I'm gradually learning it takes a LOT to blast people out of their existing patterns.

It's not squatting, it's investing :)

I still remember Rick the Shit King of Pigeons registering a bunch of BP Oil names and saying how it was still possible to get type in traffic.

Yup. Come in all shapes and sizes.

Someone smart regged complexmigraine a while ago.. :)
