'Spam King' gets nearly 4 years in prison
Judge likens sending fraudulent e-mails to Internet pollution

By PAUL SHUKOVSKY
P-I REPORTER

U.S. District Judge Marsha Pechman ended the reign of the so-called Spam King, who earned his title by sending out millions of unwanted e-mails, by sentencing the Seattle man to nearly four years in prison Tuesday.

Robert Soloway is the second person in the country to be convicted under the Can-Spam Act for flooding the virtual world with fraudulent e-mail messages. His sentence of 47 months is less than half of what prosecutors wanted... (read more)

Guys like that make me want to see caning introduced as a punishment in this country. He deserves a daily dose of body cavity searches and Yoko Ono music.

It never ceases to amaze me why people would want to send out annoying messages to other internet users. Its just 'polluting the internet' in my opinion.

A quote:

Direct Mag said:
From the bank records, investment and account statements, and various financial documents described and referenced within this affidavit, I have determined that Soloway and [his company] NIM’s fraud and spamming scheme … generated income in excess of $1 million from 2003 to 2006,” said the affidavit by Special Agent Silvia Reyes of the IRS.

The affidavit then lists 16 bank accounts with total deposits of more than $1.6 million from 2003 to 2006.

Good money in spamming until you get caught.

whilst spamming is annoying why don't they try and catch the hackers too, they are often worse. spammers who are scammers too are the worst.

my other gripe is whilst i dont like spammers, the government let the postman push loads of junkmail through your letterbox every day which is killing rainforsts and woodland and filling up landfill sites yet they are allowed to do it. in fact the post office (royal mail) works in conjunction with the junk mail people here and turns a massive profit. the whole system is screwed. priorities!

"Spammer" and "prison" -- two keywords that give me that warm and fuzzy feeling.

anyone get those transfer and renew your domains with us for only 39.95 a year letters?
You must mean Liberty Names of America aka Domain Name USA aka Domain Registry of America aka Internet Listing Service Corp. Sadly, plenty of folks fall for these scams. Over the years I've gotten a few. In all fairness... their prices have gone down, though. ;)

The Yahoo article is sadder.

I guess the biggest difference is that you can't ban snail mail unless it makes an illegal offer or threat and the snail mailers send it at their own expense instead of everybody else's expense like the Internet spammers.
