I just tried Spaceship.com. They're a NameCheap brand and launched their beta. I think they rightfully deserve a thread on NP to discuss our experiences with their new registrar.

Remember, it's still in beta so do expect some glitches, work to be done... Would be cool in someone from NC would care to chip in :) @tamar

If you search for your name through domain manager you can see the remaining time to renew it.

This is the problem exactly: you can’t trust this timeframe. If it expired May 8, Spaceship can remove it anytime after June 8. Today they can remove it, and you can easily not notice it’s gone.

Hopefully this will now become more transparent. Willing to give them a chance.

Still, everyone should check their portfolios to see if they had domains removed earlier without realizing it. I had several

I think part of the problem is the "around 42 days" verbiage. But it sounds like they will be changing that to say a definitive "30 days" instead.

Not just the verbage, the actual count down time will be adjusted as well.

I like the verbiage of 'countdown' in relation to Spaceship.

Of course many people are accustomed to the 42 days, so some kind of email notice/warning would make the transition smoother.

We all highly value transparency in our registrars we use. Otherwise we leave. Really important to get these things right. I appreciate your addressing it.

yea, they use these vague terms such as around 42 days and approximately 30 days (in their TOS). I would remove any language that is vague, even if the reality is, it's vague.

Just state the first # it could be and then go to on to say something to the effect "in our sole discretion we may allow redemptions beyond x days..."). This way no one ever expects more and if it's ever offered, they'll see it as a wonderful gesture.

I get those emails all the time. Annoyingly in fact (starting at 30... and coming often until the day prior)

I get those, too. Starting at 30 days, and again at 10 days. I had to check before coming to make this comment.

It's actually 38 days as the agent told me..it takes 24 hours to unlock it if you are on the 37th day, then you can only renew it on Spaceship. I think the 35th day should be ok to transfer away.

That countdown communicated it perfectly. I have just tried to transfer a name away after 40 days and received a 'renew your name first 'message and Dynadot sent me an email that the domain is locked. Do we need to contact CS to transfer away and after which day? Is it like Namecheap?
The countdown was not always accurate. You could not trust it because they sometimes removed the domain before the countdown expired. If it’s been 30 days after expiration, they can remove it without notice.

At least it sounds like the new method will be transparent.

They are helping me sort out my situation. Props to them

The method should be to renew your names before expiry

@enetwork question for you (re NameCheap). I have .ai regged with you. .ai is for 2 years - but the privacy component is only for 1 year. To keep privacy for the 2nd year, it says I have to auto renew the .ai. So should I just set auto-renew to on and then after the renewal date, set it back to off (I like to manually consider every name at renewal time)

Hi NameGroove, no need to do anything, privacy is synced with the domain duration by default. It will stay till Jul 2026. If you enable auto-renew for .ai domain, privacy will auto-renew with domain after the second year is over. With auto-renew off, you will be able to decide during renewal whether to keep privacy further or not.
