Someone wants to buy my domain

Just got an email from someone saying they tried to register a domain I have and they found I own it and are now wanting to know if I will sell it to them and for how much.

Now, as I registered the domain only recently, I done a google of the email to make sure to not waste my time on one of those appraisal scams. All looks clear.

The domain is a very strong keyword in a bad ccTLD, however the ccTLD does add something to the domain meaning and has obvious development potential, which is what I was going to use it for but my plans changed.

A quick google of the guys name reveals a linkedin profile where the guy is the director of a small business in the field, maybe coincidence or maybe not (name is common).

Just looking for peoples thoughts on what tactic to utilise. I feel like emailing him a price is a mistake, and I should email him something along the lines of that it was registered for a website I am making and I would be willing to listen to a reasonable offer.

I always keep it simple. Something like...feel free to submit a serious offer for consideration. Of course there are many ways to keep it simple but no need to get complicated IMO.

Emailed him back something along the lines of that I had registered it for a project, unfortunately due to more pressing matter it has been delayed, however this could be fortunate for him as it means I am willing to listen to a serious offer.

Keep us posted on how it goes! Every time I e-mailed an end-user a price, they scoff at it and walk away...Still learning :)

Good luck!!

He emailed me back asking me what I would consider to be a serious offer. Well played by him as there isnt much more going in circles that can be done and I have to give him a price.

How much did you think your project would earn you annually? Is 1 year of revenue worth it for you?

With asking price, the deal will be over very easily. So you have to decide it.

i would say ask a price first..

So are you saying all other main TLD's are already taken? If yes, then try to find out how much any of the other TLD's were traded for and then value yours accordingly. Or PM me the name I can give you a value for it.

I'd give him a price 20-30% more of what it's worth it to you to sell so it leaves you some negotiation room if it's more than what he was willing to pay. I doubt he'd be a no-responder consider he's the one who seeked you out.

And if he does not respond to your asking price, email him back telling him you were curious as to what the value was to him to re-engage him in negotiating.

If you still get no response, he was prepared to offer peanuts.

i think its always best to ask for a price if you can.

I would say.

If your interested in this domain let me know what your budget is and or make me an offer.
This domain has value to me and obviously to you as you contacted my for it.
If your serious I am also. Please let me know what your serious offer is and we can go from there.

So to translate the above in 4 words.

Show me the money!

If they contacted you, you could tell them that you only take offers.

Please come back to us with a response. I bet many of us have been in this situation or might experience something like this. A good advice is welcome.

Thanks!

What happened was I asked for $2000 and never got a reply.

This seems to happen a lot, people seem to expect you will sell them a domain for $50 and even asking for $200 can scare a lot of buyers away let alone $2000. So be it.

When it rains it poors.

I now have an offer through sedo for a .com domain, $200 offer has come in. Maybe a serious buyer for once as they didnt offer $60 or $100. But what is $200? I am going to go to the dentist tomorrow and he will take $200. Its not a lot of money in today's western society. A day's work.

.net developed, .us also points to it, .org registered but jut has a godaddy landing page

looks like they sell courses for first aid, CPR, etc.

No prices on their website

Will research how much other providers charge for these services when I wake up, its past 4am, and then determine a price to send. Hopefully, can at least get high $xxx.

One of the ways I like to respond to an initial bid is to build a case for a higher amount. Find recent sales of similar domains, talk about why the domain has value to you and why it would be more worthwhile to keep it, and what potential the domain has.

Obviously any buyer has their cutoff, but if they understand why you value the domain at the higher amount, they're less likely to just leave because you're an "unreasonable/uninformed seller".
