Some Dropcatching Questions

Do 100% of all dropped domains go through some dropcatcher or do any names every just drop without a dropcatcher trying to sell them?

If 100% of all dropped domains are showcased at a dropcatcher to resell that means any name (that I think might be worth regging) that wasn't sold at a dropcatcher either:

1) no eyeballs noticed it or
2) eyeballs did see it and no one wanted it

Does 1 above ever happen?

All domains are listed, but not all are backordered.

Lets say if there were a LLLL.com dropping, but nobody would either be interested in it or no eyeballs would see it, the domain would drop like any other domain.

I dont know if some backordering services order domain for themselves, but I would expect that to be rare.

My understanding is the drop happens in two stages, first stage is where all the registrars compete for dropping names (via backorders etc), then shortly after the drop of the rest of the names to the general public that the registrars weren't interested in.

There is automated software that can do the dropcatching for you much more effective than by hand. (products like Domain Grabber)

Not all registrars sell their expired domains.
Some just drop them.

There is a domain name that I like that's due to expire in January 2013. It is listed in GoDaddy auctions.

I am just wondering does it have to go to auction?

If the owner agrees to sell the domain to me before the end of the auction can the domain be transferred to me and I renew it and cancel the auction?

If domain has no backlinks it can be dropped without backordering and catching.
There are millions of domains...

The biggest players are SnapNames and NameJet.
It works like this:
1. sex.com is due to be dropped on Christmas.
It is listed as "Available soon", but nobody shows interest.
Domain is dropped and can be freely registered on any register the next day
2. sex.com is due to be dropped on Christmas.
It is listed as "Available soon", but you are the ONLY ONE interested.
Domain is cached by the respective site and it is awarded to you and. You pay at least 60$ for this service.
3. sex.com is due to be dropped on Christmas.
It is listed as "Available soon", but hey! It's sex.com, and 1K more people want it too...
Domain is cached by the respective site, but it goes to auction, where the highest bidder wins.

You can use drop catching software on Christmas day, but it will be you and your software against the sharks :) SnapNames and NameJet have enormous servers dedicated only to the drop catching, which I assume are producing hundreds of whois checks a second, on drop time, which is resulting in much bigger chance to took over, than drop catching software alone. The good news is that around 100000 domains (only .com .net .org.) are deleted each day - there is always a potential chance some gem with authentic PR to be there and waiting for you to dig it ;)
