Solution to PayPal scam?

Paypal doesn't seem to protect buyers at all with e-goods... Just had an idea on a possible work around to the Paypal scam.

Would it be alright to actually ship some type of large envelope to the domain buyer with USPS tracking information. The envelope could contain say... some kind of "password" or contract and your email contact. The buyer receives the envelope, sends you this password by email, and you transfer the domain.

What the buyer would actually be buying is the password/contract so that the domain may be transferred to him/her. The buyer is actually purchasing a physical item... You've got tracking information, the confirmation email from the buyer, and a transfer in domain records.

Of course, it would be $4-$5 out of your pocket, but it protects you, could be well worth it for domains where people may still tend to use Paypal.

I see no reason why this wouldn't work; and if the seller refuses to do this even if you are paying for it, it is probably a scam.

Some "excuses" why they wouldn't buy would probably be:

"Takes too long, will find another"
"I want a quick trade"

etc etc

Let me know how that goes, I was planning to do a similar thing with IDENTITYVERIFIED.ORG

Thanks :tu:

My only concern would be, could now the buyer actually be placed at risk? I think it would be a pretty detailed setup on the seller's part. Seller would have to explain the entire process, and for what domain. Maybe even include the document being sent in the sale details, without the "passcode" for the domain.

That will certainly allow you to provide proof of shipping should a chargeback ever arise.. I've heard of people doing similar things (involving sending trackable packages through the mail with contracts, etc on domains). Regardless of Paypal's stance, this does seem to reduce the incidence of chargebacks and it's something I'm considering doing myself in the near future.

I still think you're much better off using Moneybookers or another service entirely (eg. open up a merchant account at your bank and process their credit card) whenever possible. I prefer to give bulk discounts on cheaper names and lump them into packages which allow me to comfortably sell through Escrow.com -- hard to put a price on peace of mind.

Yeah personally I would use an escrow service as well... but I just hate seeing people get scammed. But people will still use Paypal regardless, and I just hate reading about how others just deliberately hurt others for personal gain. Sickens me.

By the way - what is itrader? Is that a cumulative records of all online activity anywhere (any references) or just for dealing with electronic goods like here on NP?

itrader: http://www.namepros.com/traderratings.php?

Dealing only with people who have a good trading record is definitely one of the best ways to protect yourself. With a new member, I'll often ask if the person is a member at another forum or website (eg. eBay) -- a good score anywhere is something to consider.

Ok, I didn't know trader rating here was actually referred to as "itrader", thanks.

No different then when I sell a few computer parts at this other forum I'm a regular at. I've got 72-0-0 in references at Ebay+Heatware (computer related) so I do have something. Even with tracking numbers, you still have people attempting scams... such as using a dummy PP account and getting the funds out within 3-4 days. Or making up excuses that whatever doesn't work, which is really just a stall for eventual scam. So I'll end up doing the same by asking for references.

I had a Paypal chargeback successfully won against me a couple years back because the buyer claimed his Paypal account was hacked -- how that's any fault of mine, I don't know.

Taking Paypal on domains really is like playing Russian Roulette and I doubt many people who do a large volume of sales through Paypal haven't had at least a few chargebacks -- I know I have :(
