We aren't a soccer country, IMO, Kids play it alot here, Hispanics here play alot, Orientals here play it alot, Other than, I never have seen to many adults playing soccer. And when our mens soccer team plays..like..in the world cup...we stink! LOL

I think if Beckham's first season or two goes well, meaning there's a lot of buzz around him playing, more ticket sales, higher ratings, etc, you'll see a lot more European players coming over to the United States to play, which in turn will probably boost the popularity of the game in the states because then the teams will be more competitive and more exciting to watch. I think soccer is increasing in popularity more and more every year and this will help it grow even faster.

Not to many people around here play soccer or follow it for that matter.

Same here in Canada, I've never understood the point of having a 0-0 tie game lol.

In the US we have so many competitive sports that soccer is a dime a dozen. Like said our US team sucks.

No matter how much promo and advert the league does, it will never equat to basketaball, baseball, football, hockey and boxing which is the top sports in the US.

I live in the Los Angeles and the Galaxy, pfft is not that hot, people do fill up the Coliseum where they do play. But you will find more of other cultures watching the game, that grew up on it. I guess soccer is viewed as a intermural sport than anything. Something for little kids, like ayso and middle and high schools and colleges.

It just doesn't have the same fan base as it does outside the US. I really dont think Beckham will revive the game at all in the US. Unless you arlready familiar with Beckham. He will not carry much weight unless you are an avid fan of the sport of soccer. If he were someone like Yao Ming or a baseball pitcher from Japan or an outfielder from Central America, I am 95% sure the US sports fans will/would be more interested.

I think if anything that Beckham's wife would be more interesting to the US public. Especially since that the Spice Girls are having a reunion.

Beckham is a washed up star....he wasnt transferred due to footballing reasons. He was just brought to America for publicity as its probably the only footballer that Americans have heard of!

In saying that....i couldnt name one American Football, Basketball or Baseball player :hehe:

It can be because you are not interested in sport.

I am very interested in sport...i started a local football team and played for them for 10 years! I have also been a season ticket holder for my local team since i was 5 and paid top dollar to get front row seats to see my team play a friendly against Barcelona

I also play golf and snooker and i also sail :hehe:

Beckham is long passed his prime, like kev said. He was b(r)ought for publicity. It probably won't do much either way, but who knows.

You guys are acting like since it's people of "other" ethnicities going to the games, that it doesn't count or something.

Actually Anton, with the U20 FIFA World Cup going on here in Canada, I've seen a ton of interest. Games in Victoria, Burnaby, Toronto, Ottawa were almost all sold out. Montreal would be tough to sell out with a 60K stadium but they have attracted close to 45K. Edmonton is the only one that didn't work out so well, IMHO.

And Toronto FC has really brought out the passion for club soccer in Toronto, maybe Canada too.Sellout every home game so far (except one in which they were ~500 away from a sellout). It's definitely on the upswing.

Fact: More kids play soccer in Canada (organized + in the streets) than hockey, baseball, and basketball.

So the grassroots is there, IMHO.
