can someone enter an auction after it has started?

seems like they would let them ...it would increase business...but is it true you have to be in on the preorder to be in it?

I'm in an auction at the moment...it showed that it had started already...I entered it only to find no one else on the list...

Probably you've been bidding in one of the 3 days open public auctions. Those are the names that nobody have backordered but snapnames have kept.
Normally, for backorders, the base price is always $60 and then you enter a private auction. Once the domain has dropped, nobody but the people who backordered it can enter the auction.
If nobody else have backordered it, you win the name automatically for $60 without any auction.

yes it was a 3 day auction...but it origionally showed as a live auction and when I entered no one else is on the bidder list.

Nope.

You have to enter/bid before the stipulated time i.e. 12.15 PST, for LIVE and PREORDERED auctions.

Those are names in the LIVE auction which ends during the day itself.

There are 2 types of auctions:
1. private auctions: these are for backordered domains. You can't join after the name has been captured. It's a private auction between several bidders.
2. live auctions: these are random domains caught and tasted for a few days then released, unless someone bids. Anybody can join them so it may be advisable to wait until the last minute so as to avoid attention. It's an open auction.
