Is developing and submitting a sitemap to a search engine (google webmaster tools) important to do?
Does it help with SEO, with ranking?
How does one develop a sitemap?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

To develop a sitemap you can go to http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/ which creates free sitemap upto 500 pages. There are other sitemap creation sites too. You can search for them in google.

It is important a little bit to get most of the pages crawled.

It helps with rankings or not depends on the pages that you are getting crawled by the help of the sitemap.

I found and used that site to create a sitemap of my website.

The site is small, has 6 pages

It seems that there is a map of 1 page, the home page only.

Is it necessary to create a sitemap for each page?

Hmm if you created the sitemap from that site and there is only 1 page showing in the sitemap then you have a problem.

Check your robots.txt file and also check if links are all working okay or not.

I cannot imagine why it would only create a sitemap of 1 page and leave all out of the sitemap. Unless the other pages are not linked from the main page.

Are you using some kind of splash screen or something?

It seems I found the difficulty.

I regged *****.com and created a site.

When I used the tool, entering *****.com, it did only the one page, the home page.
When I used the tool, entered www.*****.com, a sitemap was created that included 6 pages. that is the correct number of pages.

Google has verified both *****.com and www.*****.com.

When I enter either address in my browser, the correct site comes up.

Should I enter that sitemap for www.*****.com and edit the sitemap, taking out the www part of the address, and then enter that for *****.com?

Well I don't understand properly what you are trying to say.

But I think you should stick to either one format.

http://****.com
OR
http://www.****.com

Now you should enter this only in the xml-sitemap creator.

Thanks.

-NICK-

What I am saying is this:

When I registered the name, I registered simply *****.com, and built a site.

It seems that numerous places (google included), but not all, consider *****.com and www.*****.com the same.

For some of the pages I own, typing in either will bring me to the correct page; for other names, it seems they are two different pages, different sites.

Google verified my ownership of both *****.com and www.*****.com, although I only regged the one (*****.com).

xml-sitemaps.com views the two as different names. It will map only the home page of my site if I enter *****.com.
If I enter www.*****.com, all pages are mapped.

Since that is the case, should I submit the sitemap for www.*****.com to google for both www.*****.com and for *****.com (and remove the www portion of the name when I submit for *****.com)?

Hmm you need to differentiate between things.

keralpatel.com <<< Is domain name
www.keralpatel.com <<< Is site name
http://www.keralpatel.com OR http://keralpatel.com <<< Is URL

Now if you register keralpatel.com and google uses http://keralpatel.com or http://www.keralpatel.com then it is the most common scenario on the planet. Nothing is wrong with it.

All you need to do is just do inky pinky ponky and choose one of them with or without www. and specify it in your google webmaster account.

Thanks for the input -NICK-.

Things have now been clarified for me (especially your last post, where you differentiated between a domain name and a site name).

Sitemap helps your website be better indexed by search engine robots.
Yep, it can help you in SEO in some degree.
There are many good online tools which can generate XML site map for your site.

Making a sitemap and then submitting to Google webmaster tools, Yahoo and MSN site explorer, this will help a lot.

And you can use different plugins that can automatically generate sitemaps. For example: For a wordpress blog, there are plugins available that make sitemaps automatically when someone add a new post or page.

If your website is having indexation problems, or has a poor internal link structure then using a Sitemap would probably be great .
