Is this site automated so that bots grab these articles from relevant sites, or are the articles submitted manually?

How hard would it be to set something like this up, and would it need to be updated manually or would it do it its self?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

They're submitted manually.

Grabbing them via bots would bring you a bunch of lawsuits for copyright infringement. (Unless it grabbed them only from sites like DMOZ which allow their content to be reprinted).

Look into hotscripts.com and you'll find article directory scripts. Sites like ezinearticles.com allow people to register and post their articles.
