How much is an 8-letter english word .com worth? It gets about 275,000 searches a month on Google. The PPC quoted on estibot is about $0.35. It's current page rank is 2. How much do you think it's worth? (And how much do you think it could make in a month from advertising?)

I'm sorry but I can't do that in this case...

If you can't figure out a range from this, are there any other important stats? What do you normally do to figure out how much a domain name is worth?

Equally importantly, how do you figure out how much a domain name could make on its own through ads? I feel like I have some good numbers in the searches and (max) PPC.

Here's a calculation I made to estimate the monthly revenue
http://www.encalc.com/#expr=Searche...&val3=0.01&var4=PPC&val4=0.25&var5=&val5=&p=0
(Searches * ToSite * ClickAd * PPC)

Do you think that calculation is reasonable? It's sort of assuming that I can get the website to the top of the search results.

I'm afraid I can't do that in this case... really sorry, I know it's important.

But just from statistics alone, is there a way to estimate for what a domain name is worth? How about estimating what it can make from advertising alone?

I think this formula might do the latter:
http://www.encalc.com/#expr=Search ...&val3=0.01&var4=PPC&val4=0.25&var5=&val5=&p=0
Search (per month) * ClickThrough * AdClickRate * PPC (per month)

Anyone care to describe how you go about valuing a domain name?

Domain appraisal on advertising stats? That is weird and impossible.
Domain appraisal is on domain name only.

I don't do domain appraisal on pagerank and adword price. You can pm to those that you believe can do appraisal and keep it as secret. :)

:hehe:

Ok, here's one for you. How much is a 'really old' and 'very rare' American coin in really good condition worth?? Any coin collector would love to have it for sure!! How much would it bring in auction? (Can't tell you more, but this should be a guideline.)

Ok, I get that you can't figure out domain appraisal by advertising stats. I figured it might be possible to at least estimate monthly ad income from advertising stats. I have no experience at this, that's why I'm asking the "Name Pros" in the first place! :)

I mean I have literally no idea if getting 275k search results is good or not, and what that would translate to in ad revenue given a certain max PPC ($0.35). I'm just looking for a ballpark estimate. If concrete stats aren't good, what specifically about the word would you look for to judge it?

I think there is no-way to give you an answer without knowing the domain name. For example, "football" is way more valuable than "secodont".

Generally nouns are the most valuable, followed by verbs. Adjectives and anything else bringing up the rear.

Ok, I'll give you some names. I really don't even know what's a good ballpark value for stuff.

For instance, what would you say about a product noun like whiteboards.com or dumpster.com?

How about an adjective like cumulative.com or dynamic.com?

How about a verb like invigorate.com?

I've seen listings like the one at dnjournal.com... but I'd like to understand how people even figure out a ballpark value.

Thanks.

Goto www.NameBio.com and look for domain sales similar to the domains you mention. That would give you a ballpark for similar domains.

However in the end, the only real value of any domain is one where a willing buyer and selling agrees on terms and the sale is actually transacted.

Thanks, that's very interesting...

It's very puzzling though! For example,

blackjack.com and wisdom.com sold on the same day at around the same price. Yet I can see that blackjack is an in-demand thing and gets a lot of interested searches, but wisdom (while in-demand) isn't something people are necessarily going to buy or search for on the internet.

So it's strange to me that someone valued wisdom.com slightly more ($475,000) than blackjack.com ($460,000)!

When you figure that one out come back and tell us

You say there are 275,000 searches for the word a month.
Now i'm not sure what your experience is and you probably know this already - buy they won't all come to you.
if you own the generic name you may get some type in traffic, but a domain won't be listed in the SE's - you'd need to develop for that, and even then you'd be at the back of the pack. So please don't base your future earnings projections on the number of searches.
Still good luck with it. would be nice to know the name, but i can understand your reluctance to share.

Domain investors and end users may value domains on many factors:

Commercial vs non-commercial
If is it associated with a product and an established market...
If it is a noun, adjective, verb, adverb...etc
Revenues...Etc.

Based on the stats you've given and if the single word is commonly used among consumers to link it to an existing market, a "solid" keyword and a noun; in addition, it is a dot com domain, you're looking at between five to a six figure price...Although, it appears that PPC revenues are not that promising! It could be less or more since you have not mentioned the domain!

It also depends on:

If you are the seller or the buyer and what are your plans for the domain.
Etc.

Here is an 8 letter English word on eBay; which may give you an idea, unless that is the domain you are referring to, but you have to wait till the end of the auction

Good luck!
