Decentralisation is already taking big bites out of legacy systems and ‘Handshake’ TLDs and SLDs are disrupting the Domaining status quo.

Handshake aims to put the entire naming process on its own blockchain. The 100,000 most popular domains (as determined by the Amazon-owned internet analytics company Alexa) are off-limits for now, but unlike ICANN, Handshake allows you to register any other domain you want via auction.

Have you invested in any? Please feel free to share any investments you have made.

Aren't Handshake domains different than dot eth and dot crypto?

My understanding is that they are on the BTC blockchain, which is seperate than Ethereum domains. Do correct me if I'm wrong.

I think that most people are desiring domains on the Ethereum chain because it's more popular with DeFi and NFTs (which are being used to mint domains now).

Investing in HNS is almost as bad as investing in IDN's ten years ago... There are other ways to invest in web3.0...

I got a few just in case. They only cost a few bucks for 2 reasons -

    1. HNS was cheap
    2. Nobody really knew about the auctions

    EV
    Bots
    Eden
    Cryptostore

I would personally stick to ecosystems that work with ENS.

Speculatively regged these a few months ago:

    BNSDomains /com
    CrosschainDomains /com
    NFTNS /com

Thats interesting. How will this fit into the current namespace though. Will HNS domains end up being simply subdomains of a HNS tld?

I don't invest in something I dont understand. How do these domains work? And can they coexist with normal tlds?

For example if I buy "online" at HNS how the browser will differentiate between my project.online HNS domain and regular .online TLD domain?

You cannot buy existing Icann approved TLD's on HNS. One of the beauties of HNS is that the existing ~1500 TLD's are all reserved along with the top 100,000 alexa ranked domains. So if you wanted to buy .nike or .porsche you would not be able to as those are reserved for the companies to claim whenever they want to.

The opportunity is with common words that make sense as an extension - sure you have to jump through some hoops to resolve at the moment, but imagine the hurdles when BTC started. Again, not saying Handshake will work 100% but just like bitcoin - it may not hurt to pick up a few gems while the pickin is good. My top 5 TLDs at the moment:

    .billion
    .million
    .diva
    .nftart
    .gotcha

But what if a new .billion TLD is created and approved by ICANN? You will hand over your HNS domain that you bought?

    The handshake domain is Billion/

Note the slash on the end. That’s why I bought 4 of them early on and quickly aborted.

So many possibilities - we can only speculate at the moment.....imagine 2010 for bitcoin.... thats where we are for handshake....first email sent on dweb about a month ago.

Probably take 1-2 years for approvals with icann.... by then some of these TLD's will be developed.... maybe even mine.....Just like bitcoin, you have the opportunity to control your TLDs with private keys.... where no one can confiscate them from you! They will continue to resolve on the HNS route... sure there will be some name collisions but imagine this....

its taken 23 years for icann to release 1514 TLD's ....
HNS currently has north of 600,000 TLD's released.... in about 1 year with .music being the main name collission... you can read more about how they plan to address name collisions on github.

Maybe when you do a google search eventually it will ask you which route zone you would like to resolve on and quite possibly there could be multiple options beyond DNS and HNS....- again pure speculation, but sure is exciting times!

Just applied to become a registrar for the TLD

    .VASP

Every crypto business on the planet will have to adhere to VASP regulations.

Never thought 5 years ago I would be making arrangements to actually become a registrar.
