Okay, this might sound like dictatorship, but of late, I've been seeing more and more newbies appraising names in the appraisals section. They usually tend to put an unrealistic value on names, giving the name owner (who usually happens to be a newbie too) a false impression of his name's worth. This might've been okay if some senior member had come by and given a correct appraisal, but many times, such threads get ignored by senior members too.

So what do you think can be done about it? Such a practice only harms the name owner, as well as the appraiser, since both end up learning nothing new.

Ideas? Suggestions?

I see what you mean , But we have the "Appraiser Profile" already set up in there -

If we placed limited Access on that section - New people wouldn't be able to start threads in there.

Maybe -RJ- can set it up where only the people who have taken the time to fill out the profile could reply to threads in there :| Dunno -

Actually, this is a good idea. To only allow people who have completed the Q&A to reply to threads in the appraisals section.

Yup i agree totally.
Moreover, if there is a set format for appraisal, it would be great.
For example if someone does appraise, he / she should lay down the parameters on which he is doing so.
I recently got a monosyllabic appraisal from a guy who runs thru threads coming up with figures he would "think" they are valued at.

Getting a ridiculously unthought of evaluation definitely undermines the sales of the domain.

I understand if someone has an opinion about a name's worth, but many times, newbies appraise names without having an opinion, basing their value just on how good a name sounds. Recently, nano.vc was appraised at low xxxx 'at least', when a supra premium like poker.vc sold for just 1600. Such valuations do no one any good, IMO

Your right.

But I think opinions should come from somewhere.
Recent Sales / Good Unique Keyword Results / Google Searches / Prevelant Speculation... Something!!!

Coming up with a value without any analysis, and then being way off is bad.
I have seen this guy doing 5 appraisals in like under 3 mins. That clearly is in disregard of what would be the result in terms of valuation and then sale. I generally check valuations done on a domain before buying it.

And your right, senior (and i mean who know their appraising, not the ones with above 1000 posts) appraisers often ignore the thread, thinking theres no point.

Thanks for a much needed thread Sasha !!

No restrictions on the people who post in the apprasial section. The poster has the responsibility to check and see if they have credentials or not. The point of the apprasial section is to get opinions on more than just worth. It is to gauge "How did I do?" Should I develop?" "Has anyone tried something like this?" "I am excited, Would you be as well?"

It also provides the responder to suggest their own thoughts and opinions and ask question on the tread as well.

This is a forum and is successful because EVERYONE has a chance to voice their opinion and thoughts, crazy or not. If restricted, most of the domains would get no opinion either. Let us not forget even so call experts have wildy differing opinions as to value. The reseller market is still in it's infancy and there are no rules to value either. Let the free market decide and everyone get have an opinion.

USA, USA, USA. :)

Would be really nice if more experienced appraisers would visit the forum and guide newbies.

In the "Active threads" menu there is a "Zero replies topics" choice, see if you can load that once in a day and maybe help other people.

Also if the original poster should check the credentials of the appraiser, that should apply to other posters as well. If a poster puts an uninformed appraisal of $xxxx we should not see follow-ups in the same ballpark from other newbies, that only reinforces the initial appraisal and gives a false security to the OP. If you want to support someone else's appraisal, fine, but first make sure it is a serious one.
