Should I change to a shorter domain?

I just bought a 3 letter/number .org domain that represents the acronym of an industry my website is in. My current domain is wordwordword.org (the words combined represents a growing industry within a bigger one) but now I own the acronym of those words which is commonly used. The site is old so I'm kind of scared of changing the domain. Will I lose my results?

I decided to buy this from someone for $600 dollars after finding out that the .com domain was recently sold to a big company in the industry and that site is following the sub industry my site has been promoting since 2006. I am ahead by 4 years but I'm scared they will catch on if I don't make a change in my domain. I am still the first result for the acronym even though my domain is wordwordword.org rather than their letternumberletter.com.

My question is does it really matter because the wordwordword.org domain already has top results in google for the acronym keyword of the industry. Or should I change it to increase my professional look.

Was this a good buy if the .com domain is worth a lot more and should I change my domain from wordwordword.org to the acronym letternumberletter.org(L#L.org)?

I was thinking about maybe redirecting the acronym to the full word domain but another side of me tells me to make the switch so companies can take you more seriously.

Same here. Redirect to the LLL, do a HTTP/301 redirect so that search engines will pick up the new domain.

Acronyms are easy to remember, but not descriptive.

Imho, based on the info you've provided, keep using the longer domain - and redirect the L#L to it (maybe add the L#L under your logo or somewhere prominent on the homepage).

On a related note, if you haven't already, register the .com version of your wordwordword .org domain (keep using the .org though, regardless, since it's well indexed and fits your business).

I think that you should find a way to use both domains together. It is very fitting that they are both .org and you could make like SISTER SITES. Perhaps put a different spin or focus on something else in that industry and take the opportunity to cross promote the 2 websites.

I feel that redirecting either of these domains would be a waste.

Just my opinion for development ;)

.com was taken already like years ago. But it's not really competing with mine. I was thinking about doing this.

I don't think I have the time to start another site right now. I'm still trying to grow my long domain so it's even bigger than it is.
