Should I Buy Domains Like These?

Hello all,

I can scrape the expiring auctions at GoDaddy and then I filter them a certain way which gives me some decent results. Using this method I find domains that may have value but I'm not quite sure.

Here are a few examples of what I found today:

Code:
http://www.2cab.com
http://www.2van.com
http://www.14-8.com
http://www.uk35.com
http://www.zip88.com
http://www.mrs33.com

By the way these should still be there if your reading this thread today so if they do have value jump on them!

My concerns are:

1. Even though a few of these are 4 character the number in them or the dash will make them worth much less if anything.

2. They come out of the expiring auctions, does this effect the value of the name.

Am I looking in the right direction or should I start doing something else.

Thanks,

-Nick

Ask yourself, what would you do with these domains ?
Is your intention to develop them, or resell them ?

Personally, I would say that just because they are short does not mean they are valuable, because they mean nothing special. Just a mix of letters and digits. It's not like a LLL name that can stand for a company acronym, or a combo with meaning like h2o mp3 or mt9 etc. So why would someone want to buy them ?
Probably you can find similar domains still available. For example mrs77.com is available.

- If the number in the domain does not have a clear meaning, it hurts the value.

- If the hyphen is not in common use, like with with "wi-fi", then it may also hurt the domain's value.

I suggest you check domains you find with Estibot.com or Valuate.com and see what value they place on them. Domains with a appraisal over $1,000 MAY be worth getting, but only if you have some idea what to do with them. If you just sell them here on NP you can't expect more than 10% of what they appraise at, if you are very lucky to sell them at all.

Don't buy many domains if you do not feel pretty sure you can sell them. The way you get that feeling is you buy one or a few, and then sell them. Then you can buy more to sell. Don't do what I did, which is to buy hundreds of really great domains only to find out no one wants to buy them, or if they do, they will only pay $1-$3. :(

Okay, well I did buy one the other day:

Code:
5minutes.net

Valuate says it's worth $2,200. I think it could be a good video site. Was this a wise choice? I guess my plan was to list it on Sedo or Flippa.

Not a bad domain, but remember that the domain doesn't make the site. The site makes the site and the domain is the icing on the cake. Is Flickr.com a good domain name? Not to me it isn't. I would not have paid $5 for that domain name before it became famous.

5minutes.net may do fine as a video site, but it may lose traffic to the video site on 5minutes.com. Why would I try to put a site on a domain that was not a.com if the .com already had a site? Even if the .com is bad, it will be helped by my great site on the other domain. Most people try typing in the .com first.

You should list it and see if you can sell it. It may work, or you may wind up selling it for about what you paid for it. Good Luck!

Well, the domains look short, but I am not sure if they have any value.

How much money do you want to spend for them?

Since they were GoDaddy closeouts I would have spent about $15 for each of them. I decided not to get any of them. I'll keep looking to see if I can train my eyes to spot good names; in the meantime I'll keep studying what makes a domain valueable. And only buy ones that I know are really like one or two words that make sense.

To that end I suggest spending some time mooching around the appraisals forum, by the end of a couple of months you will start to see what is valuable just by looking at it :)

I keep finding one word ones like earlier there was:

I know it's not worth a fortune - are these .ws ones worth investing into?
