So, from what I've figured there are basically three main ways of making profit off domains.
  • Selling them
  • Parking them
  • Developing them

Selling them is quite self explanatory and applicable to nearly any domain in the industry, the problem is with the other two.

Parking a brandable domain is, theoretically, not very profitable in the sense that a brandable domain is usually a string of characters with no special meaning until branded (which is usually until after sold XD) so the chance of it having any organic traffic is extremely slim (there may be some exceptions, I am not a know-it-all).

Developing the domain into a website poses another problem due to the fact that it greatly reduces the niche in which the domain may be branded which may in turn greatly reduce its price. The math is simple - if you develop randomdomain.com into a picture hosting website there is a majestic chance that no one apart from picture-hosting-enthusiast is going to look to buy it thus, basically, losing on its brandability.

Do you have any ideas or thoughts regarding this?
Do you (attempt to) earn any profits on unsold (hoarded) short/brandable domains or do you just let them sit in hope that they will be bought off eventually?

selling domains is not self explanatory, nor applicable to nearly any domain in the industry.

you can't generalize the process, methods or strategies involved in such a manner.

if it was so, then newbies wouldn't constantly ask where and how, do you sell your domain names.

parking is not or was not, intended for brandable domains, it was established to capitalize on domains with traffic.

however, now that such names have grown in demand, many owners will park them initially until they do something else with them.

those who buy brandables with "excess" capital from domain sales or ppc income....know the process of "waiting" for the right offer.

those who buy brandables because they are new to the bandwagon, end up hoarding a stack of new registrations.

the difference is experience and 'gut', which takes longer to acquire, than watching some videos and reading a few articles.

:)

I'm sorry, I didn't express myself quite right there.
I didn't mean to say that the process of selling is self explanatory I meant to say that selling domains for profit is self explanatory, as in "Trading a domain name for cash (or money in general) in order to end up with more cash than you initially had" xD

So, basically, what you are saying is that apart from selling he domain at the right price there really is no way to "monetize" a brandable/acronym domain?

actually, selling domains for a profit is not self explanatory either.

as there are plenty of posts here that ask, "how much is this domain worth? or, "buyer asks how much...what do I say" type of questions.

so if you don't know value of your domain, then how much profit, if any, can you derive from a sale?

So, basically, what you are saying is that apart from selling the domain at the right price there really is no way to "monetize" a brandable/acronym domain?

until that domain starts to receive visitors, then there is nothing to convert into dollars.

you can spend money to promote it (development) and hope to generate earnings from that, but that's an extra expense with no predictable returns.

build your own website to showcase your brandable domains.. You can't really monetize them unless they have traffic. You can park them, but make sure that it is clear that the domain is for sale on the parked page.

Keyword: Brandable. Building a dedicated site to showcase brandable domains is a great idea. Building a dedicated site to showcase mediocre domains sets off the snake oil alarm.

There's a fine line between an entrepreneur or startup wanting a great name and an established business owner stuck in their prehistoric ways.

The majority of people can't, won't, and will never understand the concept of buying a domain because it's mostly an illegitimate business. It really takes marketing, networking and educating people to sell domains period.

To sell anything out of the ordinary like short domains, crazy extensions, and numbers is more effort for about the same monetary gain. Some people do it for the challenge and experience though.
