SEO Sabotage?

I came across a site today that had a bunch of backlinks on porn sites. The site in question was a legal services site in a major city. I'm not sure why anyone would put backlinks for such a site on porn sites, and it made me wonder why they were there. Is it possible to sabotage a competitors' site with bad backlinks?

They certainly didn't put them there themselves...

Would it hurt them? Depends on a lot of things It wouldn't be appropriate to this forum to discuss what would harm someone else's site and what wouldn't, but if it's your site any links you think are harmful should go straight into a disavow file.

Another Major Domain Forum has some pharma and payday loan links - certainly isn't hurting them.

Not sure of the age or history of this "legal services site in a major city" site, but is it possible, they (webmaster) did it when lots of backlinks (no matter from where) helped with ranking?
