TV Week has a funny piece up on how CBS (The TV network) is ruling in the SEO war on Google.

For example, when you google Shark, you don't get those sharp-toothed denizens of the sea, you get the CBS TV show Shark! And forget the scientific explanation of The Big Bang Theory, it's all about the CBS comedy.

I have images of kids going to school with science reports on how Sharks are actually lawyers who troll the waters looking for weaker folk to gobble up.

I haven't looked at the links leading to the TV show, or sites on the species, but this may be more of a commentary on our society than any intentional SEO on CBS' part.

In the United States, do you think more people are blogging about (and linking to) "Shark" the television program, or "Sharks" the creatures that make me not want to scuba dive? I'd guess the former.

Sadly, you're probably right but it also goes to show how any word can become the next "hot" property with the right kind of marketing. Go back 15 years and say eBay or Google to anyone and they'd give you a blank stare.

Totally agree. If you have a short domain, especially if it's an actual word (even if not a .com) it's tempting to just hold on for that chance that one day it will mean something more commercial.

An even more interesting one is a google search for "house".
