It is always good to be on the lookout for Ebay scams, however in principle I don't think it would be wrong to sell, or more appropriately rent/lease a sub-domain.
Let's just say you had "carsales.com", (ignoring for the purposes of this illustration any TM issues), you could offer to rent someone the subdomain ford.carsales.com or toyota.carsales.com - that may well be a valuable asset to them if they sell those cars. You could have a portal of "carsales.com" and they could be associated with that site using the sub-domain. This is often used in business and owners do make money from such rentals - I would be wary of buying a sub-domain though as control over its existence could be limited unless arranged more formally than through an Ebay auction.
Just my personal opinion.

many companies designed their business models around selling sub-domains.

take eu.com and uk.com for instance.

Yea, but maybe people think they are buying what they really aren't... That probably makes no sense, lol

I'd be extremely cautious when buying a subdomain on Ebay lol... you don't have much control if it isn't a real domain.

Absolutely agree with RJ there.

I think if you want to buy a domain you should be able to tell if it's a domain or a sub domain by looking at the name. ;)

well technically they are buying as say for example

abc.xyz.com is for sale for year - $500

two years maybe more or renewal...i know a lot of people who have some awesome three letters being rented that way..

well there is nothing wrong with it..sellers are selling all the things that they think are worthy..its the buyer..just because i think something is worthless doesn't mean it is worthless..a domain that is well established and you can get a sub domain thats a very big thing actually..soo what wrong with that?

Why would toyota.carsales.com be worth renting rather than owning toyotacaringo.com or whatever you can find the is available?

You would really need to trust the TLD owner. If you build your business around a subdomain, and the domain owner lets it expire or sells it to someone else, you're screwed and there's nothing you can do.
