Setting up a sub-domain

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone knew how to set up a sub-domain (e.g. cars.web.com). There is a niche which i think i could exploit and i think it would work (im keeping hush just now about it for now )

I asked for advice from gazzip who said it would cost XX,XXX to do and thought there might be people with experience of setting up sub domains and dealing with servers.

If you have had experience can you please pm me.

Cheers

.US domains.US domains
Usually your registrar or your hosting company can create subdomains for your domain. This would be fine if you were planning to use them or if you wanted to rent out a few.

If you want to sell registrations like CentralNIC then yes, it will probably cost you quite a bit of money to set up.

i might as well tell people what i was thinking.

Basically Scotland doesnt have a domain extension :( so since .scot.uk was thrown out from nominet uk, i thought about doing .scot.eu. I am in negociations with the owner after i failed from 4 different registrars (3 if you dont count go daddy) to get this name. What should i pay for it. Would u say it would work.

There has been pressure for a scottish tld after the release of .sc (seychelles) and this was why .scot.uk was proposed. There was talk about .sco extension but this is going to be like the .cat and be specifically for scots/gaelic language i think

Hi Kev,

Interesting idea :)

I would say that the cost would really depend on what services you wanted to offer. It should be relatively simple to set up a system where the 'owners' of the sub-domains can set up their own DNS records. At least in Linux I can see how it could be done ( talking rough ideas here, not really going into details at the moment .... Used to run a Linux hosting company for 5 years so have a vague idea :) ).

You could set up your own version of whois to show the owners details ( Just an SQL database query ), but it would only show your information if someone tried it with a normal Whois lookup.

Easiest way is to provide the sub-domains and hosting as a package.

Will have a bit more of a think about it and let you know.

All the best.

Richard

thanks for your info and help. Very much appreciated.

I have contacted the owner of scot.com (it is parked with no traffic) aswell to see if i can get it on the cheap but id expect he would want 2 sell for low XXXX to mid XXXX for it or more. I tried to emphasise that it had no traffic and no google/msn links http://www.urltrends.com/viewtrend.php?url=http://www.scot.com

scot.eu owner not replied yet so ill keep you posted on where i am at :)

Cosidering the lack of use of the .me.uk, .net.uk and .org.uk I would suggest that it wouldnt suceed.

IMHO :td:

Cool idea, but it would definitely take a lot of work. If you manage to get scot.eu, I'd suggest you check out how Centralnic marketed their "extensions" like eu.com and us.com.

I think your main problem is not going to be a 'technical' issue but rather one of trust.

You would own scot.eu, sell off the sub domains .... But how will those people know that you are not just going to take them all back once they have built up the traffic ? ... Or sell to someone else that would ?

You could provide a contract, but remember that will mean that you are obliged to keep providing the service once you even have even one client. It could end up as a bit of a mill stone round your neck in that you have to keep providing the service even if you are making a loss ...... Don't forget you will also have to be providing tech support to all your clients as well :)

Not saying it could not work ( I think the Scots are a pretty nationalistic lot, so should be able to sell quite a few on the idea :) ), but will take a lot of thinking about and number crunching.

All the best.

Richard
