Hello,

I listed a forum that I have up for sale and a user PM me telling me he would pay just $100 for the DB.

This is only a small forum with 2,052 posts in 449 threads.

He has said he only wants to buy the forum DB and not the site itself, As he wants to merge it with his forum.

I am able to keep the domain name and the site but must remove the DB from my server etc.

What are the legalities of this? I am thinking about it but not sure

Thanks

Dan

Well, there is nothing wrong with selling your database only to a buyer, but you msut not re use the same database ever again as your transfer the rights attached with it to the buyer. I have seen many instances of people buying only databses os basically theres nothing wrong with it apart from the fact that you will either have to re build your community or sell it off in parts.

how does such a thing occur? Wouldn't the users continue going back to the website they've been accustomed to? If Namepros sold me as part of their DB, yet continued running the site, I'd just sign up again and start reposting... Im confused about how this works?

You can tell him no. I would. If you sell the DB without the site you are getting less value as I assume your domain is worthless without the forums. Yes you could start all over but really just selling off your users like that ain't cool.

I would tell him buy the whole thing or nothing.

There could be issues with this. People will suddenly be registered at sites which they did not register at and give permission to store information such as e-mails.

I am not sure if people include member bases as well, i think it i ssimply the trade of posts and threads to make a forum look active.
