Legalities of a fan site?

I'm wondering what the trademark legalities/issues are around fan sites? Is it a sort of "fair use" thing, or are you required to get permission before proceeding? I'm thinking along the lines of a fan forum type of site, with possible posting of photos (taken by the fans) of the particular star.

Thanks...I actually did search "fan site" before posting, but for some reason NamePros search was bringing up a completely blank page for me.

EDIT: Of course now I try it again, and the results come up...

"fan" might be too short and "site" too common

I know that doesn't answer your question but basically you need to just view the existing threads in Legal that are trademark related and get a grasp of what rights are available for fair-use and TM holders.

The quickest answer I can give you.

A fan site shouldn't be making income from the TM of another person or entity.
