Selling domains on different sales channels

When I read the various forums, I read recommendations to actively search potential buyers and email them.

Other people on the forum recommend to NOT contact potential buyers by email and let them come to you (to be in a better negotiating position). They use 'distribution channels' to make the market aware that you have a domain to sell

Are there market subsegments where one method is more appropriate than the other ?

What 'distribution channels' are most effective for a beginner ?

At least for me, I rarely just email to first meet because I am not sure they are reading it or they think it is spam or have no interest. Emails for me usually are for later during the negotiating, transfer and payment process.

I usually Google research in depth potential end users and set a fixed price and contact and negotiate according. I noticed those are the domains I get on the drop or hand reg and rarely would get offers anyway because they have no clue it is available. I don't like inventory sitting around.
.

If you are not getting any offers and it is not auction worthy why wait, no reason to not be pro-active. I rarely list them anywhere except where real end users congregate and not just blast the domain out there on some irrelevant distribution channels.

and contact and negotiate according

Does it mean you contact them by phone, letter (or else) ?

I imagine it would not be efficient to contact people (by email, by phone or whatever) to offer a brandable domain such as zafrina or foronic (both being currently offered on brandbucket)

On the contrary, for a domain like city+profession (eg: Pittsburghnailsalon.com), a direct approach by email seems to be the best option.

The choice may not be black and white for trendy domains (probably drones or bitcoin 5 years ago...)

I can easily visualize how to find potential end-buyers for some kinds of domain names, mainly:

city+ profession
emd

I have a real hard time to imagine how to find potential buyers when you have simply a brandable/pronouncable domain that means nothing for a visitor. My best guess would be to offer it in brand bucket or similar
