Got the following email today inquiring about a domain name i own. I responded saying make an offer and included a list of 27 other domains that match the buyers interests. I was offered $xxx,xxx.00 amount for my bulk list of domains. IMO i honestly wouldnt put a value even close to this offer. The buyer said they require an appraisal for each domain name, before committing to a sale. They gave me a link to an appraisal service they recommend. Looks fishy to me. Anyone else get a similar email before??

The Email

Hello!

I represent a wealthy investor from Beijing (China) who wants to purchase pennyphones.net.

Please respond and specify a desired price in the subject line.

My client has $415,000 usd budget for 45-55 domains. He is very interested in financial, shopping, adult, gambling, mobile phones and weight loss related domains.

Please let us know your preferred payment method (PayPal, Western Union, escrow etc.). If this is your first time domain sale I may help you with the sale/transfer process.

Are you a member of domain seller communities/forums? Probably, we know each other under some nicknames?

Regards,

Michael Duncan

I represent a wealthy investor

I stop reading the post after these two.

a) If someone interested in your name, don't essentially tell them 'Yeah I got a boat load of them!" Just work the one name you was contacted about.

b) When someone says they're representing a wealthy investor, your crap detector has to be at full mast and be prepared to junk the email right there.

This is why no matter how many huge offers I make I can't seem to buy even the worst portfolio.

It's the same, slightly tweaked, appraisal scam that's been going on for years because it's simple and effective. It has a $xxx, xxx carrot dangling that many people can't help but try for. There aren't many people who can afford to ignore an $xxx, xxx offer even if they're 99% sure it's a scam. There's always a flicker of hope that it's true because we all want it to be true. But it's not.

They are probably doing this bulk email-marketing for building their own data. I can see they are rotating SENDER NAME and EMAIL to avoid being spammed.

This is what I got from him for JOOTIS.com
