Hi I am just wondering what the safest place to register your domain? I have a very good domain and am scared that it will be stolen...

Fabulous and Moniker are pretty secure.

Personally I would avoid godaddy for high value domains.

MarkMonitor ... not cheap and may be overkill for your needs. They are the only registrar I'm aware of that offers VeriSign Registry-lock for .COM domains, and appears to have well designed security procedures to protect domains.

Next best choice, of the better known registrars, is Fabulous ... contact them for details and pricing (the extra security is often free for larger-volume accounts). Good pricing and excellent support.

GoDaddy.com might have a bad reputation, but it is based on the sheer size. They control like 40% of the domain market.

If you have a large portfolio, GoDaddy offers a service called DTVS to executive account holders. It is as good as any other security out there.

Just pick some of the famous brand names out there like Intel, Motorola, Facebook, Oracle, etc., then check their WHOIS data and see where they registered their names.

I suppose that it is always safe and secure to register domain names via accredited Domain Registrar that has nice reputation.
There are many Registrars available in the market, so you can compare them and choose the best one.

No it's not. Domains get stolen from godaddy all the time. Other registrars offer executive locks, registry locks, and SecureID pin systems to prevent theft.

I am guessing you don't understand how DTVS works from your comments. It is not the standard GD transfer system.

Yes, I know how it works. I also know you need 300+ domains there to qualify for it, and I think that was recently raised to a higher minimum. I'm assuming the OP doesn't have 300+ domains at Godaddy, and I personally have 3 domains there because I choose not to do business with Godaddy unless necessary.

And it still doesn't negate the fact that domains get stolen from Godaddy all the time.

Fabulous and name.com both have a security key fob. This is more secure than vocally telling Godaddy your pin number. Fabulous also has Executive Lock. And you don't need 300+ domains there to use these features.

The most secure registrar is your own.

Personally one of my faves would be Fabulous. I don't trust GD much, because we have seen how they caved in to Kentucky even when they didn't have to. I don't think they will go the extra mile to protect your interests.

Perhaps Markmonitor is worth a look. It's used by big corporations but maybe it means paying $100+/domain/year.

Do you have any evidence that domains with DTVS on them get stolen. If so i'd like to hear about it.

But again Fabulous requires you to either deposit $750+ or transfer 750+ domains to them to even get an account. So isn't that again difficult for an average domainer?

I never said domains with DTVS get stolen. I said that domains at Godaddy get stolen all the time, which is true.

GoDaddy.com has 40M+ domains

I bet if you took the amount of domains stolen from GD, and compared them to other registrars the actual % is the same or lower with GD domains.

Here are some other popular domainer registrars -

Moniker 2.7M
Fabulous 1M
Name.com 763,000
Dynadot 381,00

All 4 combined have 1/10th of the total GD regs. With more domains there are just going to be more issues.

That's fine, and if you like godaddy feel free to use them. I personally don't like godaddy and choose not to use them.

This thread is about a secure place to keep your domains. If Godaddy doesn't provide security features unless you have 300+ domains in your account then it's probably not an option for your average domainer. There are better options available.

Well, at least GoDaddy's requirements for an executive account are more reasonable than Fabulous for even getting an account

From Fabulous -

* Domain portfolio must generate US$750+ per month
* Transfer 750+ domains to Fabulous

If your portfolio generates US$750 a month or you are willing to transfer 750+ domains to Fabulous, please complete the form below.

Name.com offers a security fob with no minimum domain requirements.

You are forgetting that Fabulous has retail accounts, you will pay more but you get those security features.

I have a fabulous account and I don't meet either of those requirements. Mike from Fabulous has stated on this forum that if you PM him he will look at your portfolio and possibly approve you if the portfolio is good.

Even dynadot's phone security feature is good.
You need to enter a code messaged to your registered mobile to be able to do any changes to the domain.

I agree with your remark about Dynadot. I like that feature too... unfortunately it does not work with all phone companies. I speak here from personal experience. But in those cases where it works (most of them, I assume), I feel indeed it is a good solution.

There are some small registrars offering also security features that help: among registrars at a low price, NameSilo.com allows you to configure several security questions that need to be answered before making any change And they are responsive to suggestions for improvements.

Of course, with a new registrar, the question is always to know how it will develop over time - but after all, it is the same question for all registrars, including long-established ones.
